First of all, it is important to note that breaking an Oath means performing a task that goes against your Paladin Oath. For all 3 subclasses, there are different tasks for breaking Oaths and most of them can be done in Act 1 itself. Without any ado, let’s take a look at what you need to do to Break all Paladin Oaths in Baldur’s Gate 3:

Oath of the Ancients

The Oath of Ancients subclass vows to preserve the sanctity of life and beauty of nature. That means, if you do anything that causes harm to any living being, you will break the Oath of the Ancients. In Act 1, you can do these tasks to break your Oath of the Ancients as a Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Kill the Owlbear and its cub near Blighted Village.
  • Kill Anders, the Paladin of Tyr at the Tollhouse on the Risen Road before discovering his true allegiance to Zariel (simply do not engage him in dialogue).
  • Agree to infiltrate the Druid Grove when speaking with Minthara in the Shattered Sanctum at the Goblin Camp.

Oath of Devotion

For those who have taken the Oath of Devotion, they need to protect the innocent and be compassionate toward others. Hurting someone who’s innocent might break your Oath of Devotion in Baldur’s Gate 3. Luckily, not just in Act 1 but you will get the opportunity to break this Paladin Oath in Act 2 as well. Here’s when:

  • Act 1
    • Kill Findal in the underground passage under the Emerald Grove.
  • Act 2
    • Make Madeline stab herself during the interrogation with He Who Was.
    • Kill Z’rell unprovoked after talking your way peacefully into the second floor of Moonrise Towers.

Oath of Vengeance

The Oath of Vengeance demands you bring the wrongdoers to justice. If you intentionally or unintentionally fail to do so, then you will break your Oath of Vengeance in Baldur’s Gate 3. In Act 1, you will get plenty of opportunities to break the Oath, and here’s when:

  • Kill the Tieflings Nymessa and Damays when you first find Laezel in the cage after crashing on the beach.
  • Free the Goblin Sazza in Druid Grove.
  • Prod the bird to death in Nettie’s chambers in the Druid Grove.
  • Reanimate Mayrina’s husband, Connor.
  • Complete the “Avenge Glut’s Circle” questline in the Underdark and usurp the Myconid colony from Sovereign Spaw for Sovereign Glut.

Once you have broken the Paladin Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Oathbreaker Knight will show up in your visions. After a Long Rest, he will then meet you up at your Camp and initiate a cutscene. Simply give answers to his questions and you will become the Oathbreaker.
