When it comes to iconic duos in gaming the first ones that possibly come to mind are Mario and Luigi. But each protagonist needs an antagonist, Nintendo introduced Wario and Waluigi to be the rival twins of the plumbing brothers. If you haven’t played any spin-off Mario games like Mario Party, Tennis, Kart, or others. You might not have come across them. But if you have then you surely must be confused about who they are. So here is what you should know about the Wario Bros and if they are actually brothers.
Who are Wario and Waluigi?
No, Wario and Waluigi are not bootleg characters but are actually a part of the Mario universe. Starting with Wario he is supposed to be the rival of Mario. He is a short, obese, and greedy character whose appearance is quite similar to Mario. With a Yellow T-shirt, Purple Overalls, and a Yellow Cap with W as opposed to Mario’s M. He first appeared in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, but later got his own games with the Wario Land and Wario Ware series.
As for Waluigi, he first appeared in Mario Tennis for the N64. Just like Wario to Mario, Waluigi is the rival of Luigi. He was introduced as Wario’s partner. You can recognize him by his Purple T-shirt, Black Overalls, and a Purple cap that says an upside-down L. Unlike Wario though, Waluigi doesn’t have his own games.
Are Wario and Waluigi brothers?
No, apparently Wario and Waluigi are not brothers. This may be surprising but the reason Waluigi exists is to be the archenemy of Luigi. But if that wasn’t enough then the biggest proof exists with this post here by @EdwardSabaVO. This screenshot comes from the game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. As you can see they are not related. This was even confirmed by Charles Martinet “I think they’re just two nice, evil guys who found each other.”
With that, you now know who Wario and Waluigi are. While you are here I suggest you also check our guide on what Mario’s last name is and who Peachette is.
