Wondering how to pick locks and open up doors for new areas to explore or chest hiding a massive loot in Baldur’s Gate 3? If yes, then don’t worry we have got you covered with this lockpicking guide. While traversing across the lands of Faerun, players will come to find many hidden chests, doors & secret areas. And after all the perception checks, you might realize they are all locked and no one made you realize that you might need a key going forward. At times like these, either you will have to find the key itself in BG3 or you pick the lock with your skills and move forward, as brute force won’t work. So if you are unable to find the key and also want to save some precious time, here is a lockpicking guide you should check out further.
How to Pick Locks in Baldur’s Gate 3
To pick any locks, players will need an item called Thieves’ Tools in Baldur’s Gate 3. These tools will help you open locks for chests, doors, etc with your character’s Sleight Of Hand skills. Players will come across the item as they travel across the lands in BG3. They can also purchase it from Merchants like Aaron at the Hollow or Mattis. Amongst all the wares the Tiefling Child Mattis sells to you, these tools are the most useful ones. Mattis will have a better deal on the Thieves’ Tools given she steals your belongings in Act 1.
It is worth keeping in mind, to increase the chances and successfully lockpick in Baldur’s Gate 3 we would recommend you to hand over the Thieves’ Tools to someone with High Dexterity along with Sleight of Hand. If you have Astarion the Rogue Elf in your party, you should hand over the tools to him. He has both the stats required to pass the check. Rogue class may also suffice in picking locks in the game. Once you get your hands on the tools follow the steps given below:
- Head toward the door or chest in the game.
- Right-click on it and select the Lockpicking option.
- Here, you will have to go through a Dexterity check, reason why you will need a character with high dexterity.
- Players will have to match or roll higher than the number given to successfully pick locks in Baldur’s Gate 3.
If you fail to pass the Dexterity check, the Thieves’ Tools will be broken. After which you will have to replace them again. Although the lockpicking is successful you can have them back in the game.
