Super Mario RPG consists of tons of hidden and postgame content that players can deal with their team of oddballs. The long-anticipated remake also brings back the final fantasy inspired secret boss Culex from the original SNES version. And since you won’t come across the cross-dimensional being in your normal playthrough, you will have to go out of your way to deal with him.
Having said that, Culex is the second most powerful enemy just behind Smithy that you will come across in Super Mario RPG. We would recommend that you have the right build for each character and have them level up to at least level 24. Before going any further, there are some mild spoilers ahead. With that being said, if you are looking to unlock the boss fight and face the boss, then here is everything you need to know and stick around to know how you can fight him even after taking him down the first time.
How to Unlock Culex in Super Mario RPG
Players can face Culex even before completing their Campaign against the Smithy Gang in Super Mario RPG. You will be able to visit the cross-dimensional area where the boss resides as soon as you hit Monstro Town. However, you will need to first get your hands on a Shiny Stone in the game. For players looking everywhere, the Shiny Stone is sold by a tiny mole girl with a pink ribbon in Moleville. You can find her in the middle of Moleville alongside some crates selling the stone in her pur-tend store. Having said that, you will need Fireworks instead of Coins to get the Shiny Stone.
Luckily the store beside you sells fireworks for around 500 coins in the game. Just head inside the store and interact with the Father Mole to purchase the fireworks. You can then outside and exchange them for the Shiny Stone from the Mole Girl. Once done, head back to Monstro Town, and in the middle, you will come across some doors.
Simply look for the darkest one and interact with it in the game. While it will be sealed, the shiny stone will help you access the door and reach Culex in Super Mario RPG. However, this time around you may find him in his old 2D sprite. Defeating him can be a daunting task and may seem difficult without the right build, weapons, accessories, etc. We would suggest that you have Princess Peach for party healing in the game. Dealing with the Culex’s crystal can be annoying so make sure you have Geno in your party.
With that being said, after defeating the hidden boss, players will be able to face him once again. However, you will need to defeat Smithy and clear out all the possible rematches available with different bosses. We recommend you go through the list of all the postgame bosses. Once you have completed the postgame, the door to Culex will once again appear. And this time around, players will face an even harder 3D version of the boss in Super Mario RPG.
