In Darkest Dungeon 2, you can unlock new characters with an in-game currency called the Candles of Hope. To get these hope candles, all you have to do is progress in the game. Once you complete a run or die, the Candles of Hope you acquired during the run will be added to your account.

Now to spend the Candles of Hope and unlock new characters in Darkest Dungeon 2:

  1. Head over to the Altar of Hope in a new run.
  2. Then, go to the Living City.
  3. Here, you can select a Hero and spend the candles to unlock their Hero Path.
  4. Now, you can go to the Crossroads and select the unlocked Hero.

After unlocking all characters, you can return to the Living City to upgrade the Heroes. The upgraded characters will live longer and you don’t have to worry about cycling them.

The four characters called the Plague Doctor, Highwayman, Grave Robber, and the Man-At-Arms are unlocked for free in the beginning. As you progress through the game, you can unlock the following characters:

  • Hellion
  • Jester
  • Occultist
  • Runaway
  • Vestal
  • Flagellant
  • Bounty Hunter

If you are interested in the game’s lore, you can also spend the candles to unlock memories of each character to know more about them.
