Poison Type Pokemon Weakness (All Strengths & Counters)

Published Date :

When it comes to Pokemon, Poison types are some of the ones that have very few weaknesses. And if you are playing Scarlet & Violet, you will need one on your team to counter Fairy types. So regardless of whether you have one on your team or need to eliminate the ones of your opponents. Here is the weakness of Poison Pokemon, and the best moves and counters for it.

All Poison-Type Pokemon Weaknesses

all poison type pokemon weaknesses and counters

Poison Pokemon are weak to Ground and Psychic Pokemon. These weaknesses are applicable to games from gen 2 to the present generation which is gen 9. So no matter if you play Pokemon Gold, Platinum, X, Shield, or Violet. Having a Ground Pokemon or a Psychic Pokemon is enough for you to eliminate your opponents. Or if you are the one using the Poison Pokemon, then these two types are something you should look out for.

In case, you happen to play gen 1 games that are Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow. Then you should also be wary of the bug type. However, they haven’t been a concern for Poison types since the second-generation games.

Best Poison Pokemon Counters

Whenever you are up against a Poison Pokemon, you should use the following counters against them:

  • Sandslash (Ground)
  • Donphan (Ground)
  • Groudon (Ground)
  • Claydol (Ground/Psychic)
  • Excadrill (Ground/Steel)
  • Stunfisk Galarian Form (Ground/Steel)
  • Iron Treads (Ground/Steel)
  • Steelix (Steel/Ground)
  • Alakazam (Psychic)
  • Mew (Psychic)
  • Mewtwo (Psychic)
  • Espeon (Psychic)
  • Deoxys (Psychic)
  • Cresselia (Psychic)
  • Metagross (Steel/Psychic)
  • Jirachi (Steel/Psychic)
  • Bronzong (Steel/Psychic)

The reason you will see many of the Pokemon I suggested above are of steel type is that Poison moves are ineffective against them.

Best Moves to use against Poison-type Pokemon

Below are all the moves you should use to defeat Posion Pokemon. I have listed them down on their Physical and Special attacks. So teach them to your Pokemon according to their strengths. Also, try teaching them to Ground or Psychic types based on the move to get the STAB bonus. Here are them all:

Physical Ground and Psychic moves

  • Dig (Ground)
  • Earthquake (Ground)
  • Drill Run (Ground)
  • Magnitude (Ground)
  • Psychic Fangs (Psychic)

Special Ground and Psychic moves

  • Earth Power (Ground)
  • Extrasensory (Psychic)
  • Glitzy Glow (Psychic)
  • Psyshock (Psychic)
  • Psychic (Psychic)
