Abby is a woman and not a trans character as per speculation; she just has a super fit body. In the story, she goes on to kill Joel, much to the grief of Ellie. For those players who have stayed away from leaks, this comes as a shock.
This strong personality is a member of the WLF, that is, the Washington Libration Front also known as Wolves. They are an enemy faction in the Last of Us Part 2 who are very hostile and do not think twice before killing others. It is a militant organization based in Seattle.
In her younger days, Abby worked with the Fireflies. So, how does she come into the picture in the new story? Why does she kill Joel? The answer lies in The Last of Us, the predecessor. Abby’s dad is the one who was about to begin the surgery on Ellie in order to find a cure. Since Joel killed the doctors and fled with Ellie at the end of the previous story, this explains Abby’s need for revenge.
From her perspective, she has lost a father and she must avenge his death. Abby ends up succeeding in her mission of killing Joel eventually. This opens up quite the moral dilemma for the player, which is exactly what Naughty Dog intended with this twist. Interestingly, Abby in Last of Us 2 is also a playable character, apart from Ellie and Joel. She has been voiced by Laura Bailey and motion captured by her too.
