Customizing the look of your character is an essential part of any RPG, and Baldur’s Gate 3 offers extensive appearance options, including a robust dye system. This guide will cover where to find dyes in BG3 and how to use them to customize your armor, clothing, and more.
How to Find Dye in BG3?
Dyes are available for purchase from merchants or as random loot found in chests and other containers across the world. The easiest way to acquire dyes is to buy them from vendors. Merchants at places like the Emerald Grove offer basic dye colors for around 20 gold per stack.
The dyes they sell include common colors like green, blue, light blue, ocean blue, muddy red, and more. Though the selection is limited, these basic merchant dyes allow you to customize your initial armor and clothing.
You’ll need to search in dangerous areas like dungeons and caves for rare dyes. These dyes can be found as random loot in chests and boxes. The Owlbear cave northwest of the Emerald Grove is one example of where you can find rare dyes like Brown Alabaster. However, be prepared for combat when seeking out rare loot dyes.

- To dye an armor or clothing item, drag it into the empty slot. Then click the “Combine” button to apply the dye and change the item’s color. You’ll see the dyed item with its new color shown on your character portrait right away.
Mix and match dyes on different armor pieces to create your own style. Most equipped gear can be dyed to customize your party’s look. With the many dyes found worldwide and applied to your equipment, you can create unique looks for your Baldur’s Gate 3 characters.
How to Remove Dye in BG3?
If you are unhappy with the results of dyeing your gear, there is an item called Dye Remover that will allow you to remove the dye. The best place to buy Dye Remover is from a vendor named Arron in Druid Grove. Arron is always stocking Dye Remover, so you can always count on him to have some in his inventory.
Other vendors may also sell Dye Remover, but there is no guarantee that they will have it. Only when you see a small vial representing dye will you know for sure that the vendor has Dye Remover for sale.
