PlayStation has seemingly started reminding PS4 players that Grand Theft Auto 6 is skipping last-gen consoles, and the timing has definitely caught the attention of GTA fans online. Over the last couple of days, several users have shared screenshots of PlayStation notifications encouraging them to upgrade to a PS5 before GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. This has also led to speculations that a new trailer might be coming soon – rumored to be next week, however, there have been no confirmations from official sources yet.

While Sony hasn’t officially announced a major “upgrade campaign” related to GTA 6, the alerts started circulating widely between May 7 and May 8 across gaming forums and social media.

At this point, it’s no secret that GTA 6 will only release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at launch. Rockstar Games is leaving older hardware behind, most likely due to the game’s massive open world, improved systems, and next-gen graphical features. For millions of PS4 owners still holding onto their consoles, these notifications may be the clearest reminder yet that GTA 6 won’t be playable without upgrading hardware – and it won’t be cheap, considering PS5 prices have recently increased.
In a blog post, Sony announced that “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” have led to the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. The PS5 was originally released on November 12, 2020, and here are the current prices listed:
U.S.
- PS5 – $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – $599.99
- PS5 Pro – $899.99
U.K.
- PS5 – £569.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – £519.99
- PS5 Pro – £789.99
Europe
- PS5 – €649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – €599.99
- PS5 Pro – €899.99
Japan
- PS5 – ¥97,980
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥89,980
- PS5 Pro – ¥137,980
Despite the PS5 being available for years, the PS4 still has a huge active player base worldwide. We’re all expecting GTA 6 to become one of the biggest entertainment launches ever, and Sony is understandably using the hype surrounding Rockstar’s game to push another major wave of PS5 sales before release day arrives.
Many fans also see these notifications as a positive sign for the game’s current launch schedule. Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive recently reaffirmed that GTA 6 is still targeting its November 19, 2026 release date, and Sony’s new notifications seem to support the idea that preparations for launch marketing are already ramping up. This has led to speculations that pre-orders might open up soon.
For now, PS4 players waiting to jump into Vice City may finally have to decide whether GTA 6 is the game that makes them get that console upgrade.
