In Dwarf Fortress, along with sculpting and trading the dwarves might feel the need to change things up and express themselves using Writing Materials. Unlocking this unique feature might not seem like such a big accomplishment as compared to the other tasks in the game, however, acquiring a new skill is always useful.
The steps to make these materials are slightly complicated. We will help you navigate all the details, keep reading to find out how you can easily make these items.
How to Make Writing Materials in Dwarf Fortress
The best writing material in this game is Scrolls. As compared to other ones, the materials required for crafting are easier to get, as well.
- To make these Scrolls, the basic requirement is Paper. You will also require a Scroll Roller.
Now to start the crafting process first you will need to collect these items.
For the sheets of paper, you will require Plant Fibers. Once you have collected enough of this material, you can create a Stone Quern. You can find this at the Stoneworker’s Workshop.
The next thing you need to make is the Screw Press. While this is in the works, go back to the Quern and select ‘Mash plant into Slurry’ which will come under ‘Tasks’. After you get the Slurry, you will have to select the Screw Press, under ‘Tasks’ you will find ‘Press plant slurry into paper sheet’, you can add this to start this process.
Now, for the Scroll Roller, you can find the option to make them under the ‘Work Order Menu’. There are no specific materials you need to obtain to make it, you can even use metal or wood. Once both your materials are ready, you can craft them into Scrolls by using the Craftsdwarf’s Workshop.
How to use Writing Materials
The dwarfs will require a separate place to use their newly crafted writing materials. To do this, make a Library for them by creating a new zone. You can start decorating your library, as you wish. Once they have acquired all the skills to write, the primary goal is to create an atmosphere that would motivate them to start writing, so we would advise you to fill up the new zone with a lot of books, along with tables, chairs and bookshelves.
