While you may have seen plenty of horses in Dead Rails, the Unicorn is something that’s very rarely spawned (1%) which is why it has a high sell value. If you choose to ride it during your journey, you also unlock a badge, plus, it can act as a good fuel source in dire situations. Here’s everything you need to know about getting the Unicorn.

How to Get and Use a Unicorn in Dead Rails
You can find a Unicorn among a herd randomly so keep an eye out for its white body, purple mane and tail as well as the iconic Unicorn horn. If you’re playing solo, you will have to multitask and look left, and right—in towns, camps, herds—everywhere. You might even see a white horse which can be mistaken as a Unicorn from a distance. Things will be easier if you’re playing with friends, with them keeping an eye out for this animal. It is very rare so if you end up seeing it during your run, you can tame it and make it a ridable mount.
Note that it can also appear as a mount being used by an Outlaw so take down the enemy with a ranged weapon and make that Unicorn your own.
If you prefer to sell it, you can get $250 if you give it away alive. However, if it dies due to outlaws or your own bullets during a battle, you can still sell it but you’ll only receive $150. In case money is not required at the moment but fuel is needed urgently, the Unicorn makes for a good source because it will fill up the fuel tank. However, it’s best to hold onto it and use Coal and other items as fuel if possible.
Unicorns, like horses, are fast and can be useful if you want to loot towns or castles since you can outrun enemies who are on foot.

To tame a wild Unicorn, you need to buy a Saddle from a Trading post for $50 or if you’re lucky, you can find one while exploring abandoned buildings. Even after the Saddle is obtained, horses will run away from you if you go near. So the trick is to block their way with a wall or the train, and get the Saddle close to it. Once it gets equipped automatically, jump onto the horse and you are ready to ride.
