Working toward better equipment is your main goal in The Forge because that is what gives you access to tougher areas, challenging enemies and rarer drops. For this purpose, you need to know how to get Runes and Rune slots because they offer a way to make your weapons, including pickaxes, get various boosts. Here’s how to get started.
How to Get Runes in The Forge
The only way to get runes in The Forge is by defeating specific enemies. You cannot find them by mining or opening chests. Only certain enemy types will drop runes, and stronger foes are more likely to drop better runes.
Some common rune-dropping enemies include:
- Elite Delver Zombies
- Bomber Skeletons
- Reapers
- Deathaxe Skeletons (and Elite versions)
- Blight Pyromancers
- Blazing Slime
Ordinary zombies and basic skeletons do not drop them, so heading into deeper areas of Forgotten Kingdom with tougher mobs is key if you want to farm runes efficiently.

What do Runes do?
Runes provide a unique effect along with a bonus that help make a huge difference in combat and mining. Once you have obtained Runes, you need to visit the Runemaker, available in both worlds of Stonewake’s Cross and Forgotten Kingdom.
However, not every piece of gear can accept runes right away. Most weapons and armor pieces must first be upgraded to unlock rune slots. You can do this by visiting the Enhancer NPC who upgrades weapons in exchange for essences which are also dropped by enemies.

- Pickaxes often come with at least one slot unlocked by default. Here’s how to get the Miner Shards runes that increase mine power, yield (extra ores from mines) and luck.
- Weapon runes include Flame Spark (Burn), Blast Chip (Explosion), Venom Crumb (Poison) and Drain Edge (Life steal).
- Armors can also get Runes, and as of now, we have Ward Patch (Shield), Briar Notch (Thorn) and Rage Mark (Berserk).

Shield works with reducing Physical damage, Thorn reflects physical damage to the attacker, and Berserk boosts damage and movement speed. You may also get mobility boosts that increase dash invincibility, dash distance, reduce dash cooldown, increase movement speed, max health, max stamina, etc.
So, all in all, it’s worth grinding for runes because it will make you significantly more powerful than a player who chooses not to.
