How To Get Epona In Legend Of Zelda Ocarina Of Time

Here is how you can learn Epona's song and tame her in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

While riding horses in BOTW might be fun, it was Zelda Ocarina of Time that started it by letting you get Epona. This game didn’t have horses running wild in the open so your only partner throughout was just Epona. And you could easily miss her if you didn’t learn her song on time. So here is how you can learn Epona’s Song to tame her in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (OoT).

You need to know Epona’s song and have to beat Ingo in a race twice to get Epona in Ocarina of Time. You also need at least 70 Rupees for the races. The method is the same no matter if you play it on the N64 version of the game or OoT 3D for the 3DS. Here is what you need to do to get Epona:

  1. Start by learning Epona’s song. You can only do this as Child Link.
  2. After you meet princess Zelda for the first time, go to the Lon Lon Ranch. Here you will meet Malon. She will thank you for waking her father.
  3. Talk to her three times and she will teach you Epona’s Song.zelda ocarina of time learn eponas song
  4. Now, after progressing the game a bit, go to the temple of time and turn into Adult Link.
  5. Next, come back to the Lon Lon Ranch. Ingo now runs it instead of Talon.
  6. Pay Ingo 10 Rupees to ride the horses.zelda oot pay ingo to ride horses
  7. You can listen to how you can ride horses if you haven’t done before or skip his instructions.
  8. Now, play Epona’s Song. Epona will now come rushing toward you.
  9. Ingo gives you 1 minute to ride around. Use this time to practice racing with Epona. Also, run head first on the fences to jump over them and gain back the Rupees you lost.
  10. Spend another 10 Rupees and ride Epona again.
  11. This time while on Epona, talk to Ingo and he will challenge you to a race. This will cost you 50 Rupees.

  12. Beat Ingo and he will ask you to race him again but if you win this Race you get to keep Epona. Accept it, do remember if you turn this offer down you will not only have to race him again but will also lose your previous 50 Rupees. Also take note that the second race will be slightly harder. Ingo will try to block you a lot. So it is important to get the lead early and maintain it until you cross the finish line.
  13. Defeat Ingo the second time and he will give you the Horse but lock you in the Ranch.zelda oot beat ingo in race

Tips to Beat Ingo in Race in Ocarina of Time

There are effectively two things you need to do to beat Ingo.

  • Run closer to the fences: This will allow you to maintain your position or even get ahead of Ingo.
  • Use your carrots wisely: Make sure you don’t use all 6 of the carrots at once. This will cause them to regenerate slowly. The best way to use them would be to boost yourself ahead of Ingo, once he moves a bit outside.
  • Block Ingo: Just like how he blocks you, you can block him as well. Once you take the lead make sure he gets no chance to get ahead of you again.
