How To Use The Mirror Of Loss In BG3

The Mirror of Loss in BG3 is a huge mirror found in the Gauntlet of Shar and the House of Grief with no reflection. While the first one is cracked, the second one is useful and can be found in in the Lower City in the Chamber of Loss in Act 3.

In this guide, we will take a look at how to use this Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3. This magical artifact will help you upgrade your Ability Score stats but only after you surrender some of your memories.

How to activate and use the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3

What the Mirror of Loss at the House of Grief does exactly is that it gives you a chance to decrease 2 points in one stat (by giving it a curse) and increase 2 points in another stat. The curse can be removed so essentially, the Mirror of Loss can be used to get a permanent stat boost without losing much.

When you come across the purple mirror, first save your game. This is crucial because you only have one shot (per character) and you can’t fail if you want this bonus.

When you interact with the mirror, you will see these options:

  • Arcana: Study the Mirror. Try to grasp its true nature.
  • Religion: An object of faith. Examine it closely. Try to understand its purpose.
  • Religion: Offer a prayer to the mirror.

What to do at the Mirror of Loss in BG3?

  1. What you should do first is pass a DC20 Religion check and pray to the mirror and then pass a DC25 Arcana check.
  2. Next, you can choose which memory to sacrifice/trade. Select “Gaze into the mirror, intent on offering it one of your memories.”
  3. Then you will have the option to trade -2 in return for a +2 in another ability score.
  4. If you’ve saved at the right time, you can go through this process again to get a bonus if you didn’t receive it on your first attempt.

These are the options when you’re asked to sacrifice a memory:

  • Strength: Offer memories of your strength – times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power. (-2 Strength)
  • Dexterity: Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble. (-2 Dexterity)
  • Constitution: Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges. (-2 Constitution)
  • Intelligence: Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, tablets…words that left a mark on your mind – but no more. (-2 Intelligence)
  • Wisdom: Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you – old wounds, touch lessons, and fond memories alike. (-2 Wisdom)
  • Charisma: Give away memories of when your charm stood to you – the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced. (-2 Charisma)

And these are the +2 permanent bonuses that the mirror will offer you:

  • Strength: Claim memories of strength from a long-dead general, who marched under the banner of a vanished kingdom. (+2 Strength)
  • Dexterity: Help yourself to the memories of a seasoned thief’s most daring exploits. (+2 Dexterity)
  • Constitution: Seize the memories of a barbarian, whose mind and body were tempered against hardship. (+2 Constitution)
  • Intelligence: Glean the secrets of a wizard who once stalked the library of Candlekeep. (+2 Intelligence)
  • Wisdom: Turn to the wisdom of a drow. Once of Lolthe, then of Shar. (+2 Wisdom)
  • Charisma: Warm to the guile of a bard who could charm even a dragon. (+2 Charisma)

You can sacrifice the ability that you don’t need and in return, take a boost for the ability that will enhance your character’s power. Do note that you cannot increase a stat above 24 so choose wisely.

Make sure to use the Remove Curse spell from Shadowheart to get rid of the penalty and you will keep the bonus as well. And this is basically how to use the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3!
