Steam Adds Support To PS5 DualSense Controller

If you have a PS5 and are on Steam at the same time, you can now use the DualSense controller in PC games. Titles that support the Steam Input API are compatible.

Valve has announced that the PS5’s DualSense controller is now compatible with Steam games as long as they use the Steam Input API. Games that meet this requirement can be played with the PS5 controller on PC without the need for further updates.

The Steam games not only support the standard buttons, triggers, and sticks. Functions for LED, trackpad, vibration, and gyro can also be used. Valve names Death Stranding, No Man’s Sky, Horizon Zero Dawn as examples.

“This support is now available for players opted into the public beta Steam desktop client with platform wide support targeted to ship after further testing,” can be read from the Steam community.

According to Valve, the new PS5 controller is one of more than 200 input devices with API support. The PS4 controller, the Switch Pro controller, sticks, steering wheels, dance pads and “just about any other controller” are also supported.

The controller with mouse and keyboard offers advantages, especially with shooter titles. But there are many other games where using a controller on a PC is more convenient. Therefore, the proportion of PC gamers who use the controller is increasing more and more.

“In the past two years, the number of daily average users playing a Steam game with a controller has more than doubled, with millions enjoying the growing catalog of controller-friendly titles everyday,” Valve said.

For games with controller support, 60% of users use a controller. For certain genres, such as skateboarding games, 90% of players use the handy input device.

“The growth in controller usage has been even higher among players using PlayStation controllers,” Valve continued. “In the past two years from 10.9% of controller play sessions to 21.6% of all controller sessions across Steam.”

The PS5 is available now globally.
