Scorn is a first-person biopunk and survival-horror and adventure video game by Ebb Software. The game is set in the deepest labyrinths of a metropolis featuring the ghastliest monsters, humanoids, and creatures. As the game does not follow a conventional narrative, it leaves everything for the player to fill out. Unlike most of the games, Scorn doesn’t even have specific lore and story, to begin with. It was no surprise that its bizarre ending made several players pretty stumped and confused. Not to worry, check out our guide that explains everything about the ending of Scorn.
Does Scorn Have Multiple, Alternate, Or Secret Ending?
The answer to that question is No! Scorn’s ending has none of them. While the ending is pretty bizarre and vague, it leaves much for the players to interpret it. Scorn does not have substantial lore or context on the world setting. This might cause some players pretty uneasy as nothing is explained about what is going on. But one thing is definite its depraved hostile world is gradually disintegrating and dying.
Disclaimer: The following guide does have some spoilers as well as topics that might make some readers uncomfortable, uneasy, or disturbed. So, proceed only if you don’t mind.
What is its Story (Plot Explained)
Scorn features two silent humanoid protagonists. Speaking of the first humanoid, you encounter the first puzzle that involves placing an egg into the Central chamber. This gives birth to another deformed humanoid creature. We use their hands to unlock a gate and find a key as we progress. Then, as you progress into a different Incubation Chamber, you proceed to fertilize the eggs using the flying pods. But as you do so, a shower of White fluid erupts that causes our first protagonist to pass out.
Now, you switch to the second protagonist. As the humanoid wakes up from the egg, he is surrounded by tons of humanoid corpses. This means that most of the life in its setting is extinct. When the second protagonist reaches an Alien structure, a lizard-like creature lashes out and attaches itself to him. As this lizard has the alien weapon and the white fluid as our first protagonist, this most certainly is the mutated version of our first protagonist. This makes sense as most of the humanoids don’t face such events as compared to our first protagonist.
Gradually, the mutated lizard becomes a parasite and preys on the newly birthed humanoids. As you progress, you face several hostile creatures and puzzles that you have to complete. With the parasite fused, it eventually takes full control of the humanoid later in the game. Your hands become a key and weapon to survive as well as adapt to every situation. But this leads to another difficult situation as you cannot unlock the upper levels of the Temple to separate yourself. Upon proceeding further, you encounter a Contraption that allows you to separate it. But the parasite does not die and escapes.
Then, the second protagonist reaches the upper level where they see two pregnant humans aside from a locked throne room. When the second protagonist straps into a medical device hoping to repair himself, he gets cut by a mechanical doctor. This doctor slashes the stomach and head attaching their brain into a Hive mind. This results in waking up as the Two pregnant humans. You switch between these two to solve Scorn’s final puzzle to unlock the throne room. Suddenly, one of the pregnant humans pushes aside the other one and picks up the second protagonist. But as he carries him towards the throne room, it also continuously cuts him with the blade.
Upon passing the doorway, you see a Void of Light. All the distorted status of the humanoids directs us in the way of the light. But there is a twist. While this feels like an end from this damned world, the parasite (1st protagonist) returns. The parasite once again merges with the protagonist. But this time, the horrific merge results in a pound of flesh. As the two humanoids continuously meld together, they are trapped in the Scorn’s world for an eternity.
Scorn’s Ending & Themes Explained
Over time, Scorn features several themes like death, rebirth, procreation, pregnancy, and more. Its world setting felt pretty much similar to the artworks by the Swiss artist, H.R Giger. It also shares several similarities to iconic movies, Prometheus, Alien, & Metropolis (1927). And in some bizarre ways, Scorn felt pretty similar to David Lynch’s classic flick, Eraserhead to me.
In my opinion, it is a society where females are extinct. With the love for biomechanical equipment and egg-shaped pods, its world is certainly populated by males. And there are no female characters in Scorn, to begin with. In the greater aspect, all the progression might also be a plan of the HIVE network. Once you reach the throne room, you are discarded like waste by the biomechanical doctor.
As the second protagonist dies, he is awakened as the two pregnant humans. To me, it felt like constant disintegration and transformation into rebirth. And also the fact that most of the humanoids don’t live long enough to survive except a few of them. But in the end, it’s all for the players to interpret in their ways.
Pretty Kafkaesque! But the whole point felt much bleak and filled with absurdity. Such as the reality of the world we live in. Makes you think that aren’t we just a speck to speak? (Apologies for being philosophical)
