Rockstar is completely going to push players to spend the Real Money to buy gold faster when the game goes live. Once you start farming gold, you can use them to buy weapon skins, camp decorations, character customizations, and more. Luckily there are free ways to get gold, but a little time-consuming.
If you have access to RDR2 Online Beta then you must have started with missions. Once you complete any mission, do notice the upper right corner of your screen and see small quantities of gold as a reward. The reward for completing the quest is 0.01 gold. The second way to earn more Gold (around 0.10-0.15) is by solving treasure maps.
