For anime watchers looking for a grim adventure storyline where things turn dark way too quickly, quite literally, Made in Abyss is the anime to not miss out on. And with the announcement of its season 3 back in January 2023, this might be the best time to catch up with all the episodes and movies out there. However, even with fewer episodes, it can be confusing to know in which order to watch the adventures of Riko & Reg in the Abyss. Before going any further, there are spoilers ahead and we would recommend you proceed with caution. Made in Abyss follows the journey of an orphaned girl named Riko and her ambition to follow in the footsteps of her mother to become a White Whistle, a sort of legendary cave raider who hunts for relics and artifacts in the bottomless abyss. The abyss surrounds the Town of Orth and is said to consist of the remnants of a lost civilization.
The story unfolds more as Riko comes across Reg, a half-human & half robot cyborg, in the first layer of the abyss. Both of them set out on the journey to find Riko’s mother Lyza in the abyss and discover different kinds of horrors along the way. How to Watch Made in Abyss in Chronological Order
Before going through the list of seasons and movies, it is worth mentioning that the anime has no reported filler during its storyline. All of the episodes released are canon arcs taken directly from Akihito Tsukushi’s manga. With that being said, here is the watch order for Made in Abyss anime:
Made in Abyss Season 1
The very first season of the series contains 13 episodes which covers the storyline till the Poison and Soul Liberation Arc. It showcases the story of Riko & Reg descending into the depths of the abyss in search of Riko’s mother.
Made in Abyss Movie 1: Journey’s Dawn
Journey’s Dawn is the first recap movie announced after the success of the first season. The movie recaps the first eight episodes of the anime till the Seeker Camp arc.
Made in Abyss Movie 2: Wandering Twilight
The second recap movie after Journey’s Dawn covers the rest of the five episodes from the first season of the anime. The Wandering Twilight covers every event up until the Poison and Soul Liberation arc.
Made in Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul
Dawn of the Deep Soul is a canon movie that covers the entire Ido Front Arc in Made in Abyss. It progresses the storyline further with Riko, Reg, and Nanachi’s adventures and them finally facing off against Bondrewd, the first antagonist of the series.
Made in Abyss Season 2
Made in Abyss Season 2 picks up after the aftermath of Dawn of the Deep Soul and covers the entire Iruburu arc in the anime. The team of oddballs descends into the sixth layer of the abyss coming across the village of Iruburu.
Everything considered, we would suggest that you stick to the entire first season rather than going through the recap Made in Abyss movies. The movies have a lot less runtime and cover the episode in a lot less detail compared to the episodes in the anime. And given the complicated explanation about the Great Pit watching the anime episodes is ideal. Not to mention you would connect with the storylines and all the characters.
