Since the game is inspired by souls-like mechanics, players may quickly start to wonder how to parry in Black Myth: Wukong. Parrying is a defensive technique that involves timing a block at the exact moment an enemy attack is about to land on you. When done correctly, it deflects the incoming blow, often staggering or countering the enemy, leaving them vulnerable to follow-up attacks. This is an important mechanic that comes in handy during the most challenging boss fights.
Interestingly, parrying is something that’s not available from the beginning. The skill to deflect incoming attacks comes via a parry spell that you need to unlock by following certain steps. Here’s a breakdown of the process.
How to Unlock the Parry Spell in Black Myth: Wukong
Parrying in Black Myth: Wukong can be done with the help of a spell called Rock Solid. It’s an Alteration spell that changes the caster into a rock. If the opponent attacks the ‘rock’ when you’ve transformed into one, the strike will be deflected, opening up a moment to land a counterattack.
As it is with parrying in all games, timing is of utmost importance. This might not work every time either – there are some powerful bosses that can break the rock you’ve changed into.
Note that this spell has a cooldown of 15 seconds and the Mana cost is 30 pts. Here’s how to regain mana back while you’re in and out of combat.
To get the Rock Solid spell, you have to come across Tiger Vanguard in Crouching Tiger Temple’s Temple Entrance (Chapter 2).
Defeat this Yaoguai King, you will get drops of Mind Core, Keeness of Tiger, and learn Rock Solid.
After this, you’re ready to parry attacks in Black Myth: Wukong. Initiate the action right when the enemy is about to land a strike on you, after which you will see a visual cue of a successful parry.
There are multiple upgrades for this spell. Rapid Return enables you to cancel Rock Solid at will. Rock Mastery will reduce its cooldown, Nick of Time will give Focus upon a successful Deflection and Upper Hand will increase the damage of the Light Attack Starter succeeding a successful Deflection. There’s also Ironclad which provides damage reduction for a short while after a deflection with Rock Solid, and Bold Venture which recovers Mana when you perform a successful deflection.
The parry window in Black Myth: Wukong is relatively tight, meaning you have a small margin for error. Typically, you’ll want to hit the parry button just before the enemy’s attack connects. If you’re too early, you’ll miss the opportunity, and if you’re too late, you’ll likely take damage. Practice makes perfect here, and each enemy or boss might have a slightly different rhythm to their attacks.
To ensure better survival during battles, be sure to upgrade your Gourds, and armor with the help of Will, Silk, and Cold Iron Leaves.
