How to Build the Perfect PC Gaming Setup

PC gaming does come with a lot of advantages over console gaming, like the ability to modify features for a more unique experience.

Whether personal computers are superior to consoles is an ongoing debate in the gaming community. PC gaming does come with a lot of advantages over console gaming, like the ability to modify features for a more unique experience. Over time, PC gaming sales, bundles, and upgrades also get cheaper while older consoles become obsolete. That is, of course, once you’ve already invested in the ultimate gaming rig. Here’s a quick guide on how to build the perfect PC gaming setup:

1. Selecting the right PC

Casual gamers might find that entry-level desktops and laptops are sufficient for their gaming needs. However, high-end PC models and gaming-specific computers are equipped to handle the faster processing speeds that most games require. They also have a dedicated graphics card that displays games as they’re meant to be seen and played.

In choosing the best PC for you, the main hardware components that you need to consider are the following:

  • CPU: As the “brain” of the computer, the CPU executes the tasks that are involved in gaming. Real-time strategy games, for instance, are very CPU-intensive as they require a lot of processing power.
  • Graphics Card: This component includes the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), which processes and displays images, scenes, and animations. Without a dedicated graphics card, expect a lot of lagging or less than ideal displays. You can also install free PC software that can optimize the performance of your GPU.
  • RAM and storage: RAM (at least 8GB) is the short-term storage unit for your gaming data. The amount of storage needed is dependent on how big the game is, but it’s best to have at least 500GB to 1TB of storage space available.
  • Motherboard: This component is essentially what connects all the parts together electrically. It optimizes the processing done by the CPU and other units.
  • Monitor: The right monitor will make a huge difference in how immersive each game is. Choose one with a high resolution like 1080P, 1440P, or even 4K to display sharp and more detailed imagery.

2. Adding peripheral devices

Computer peripherals are parts that connect to the computer for more functionality. As a gamer, these are the most important peripheral devices you need:

  • Keyboard: Unlike consoles, your keyboard is the main controller for gaming, not a handheld joystick. Regular keyboards work perfectly well, but gaming keyboards are generally bigger and contain more keys, including the number pad that modern laptops don’t have. They also have mechanical switches that allow for more precision and better feedback.
  • Mouse: Compared to the standard version, a gaming-specific mouse has better sensors for increased accuracy and responsiveness.
  • Headset: Gamers prefer to use a headset over speakers as they create a more immersive experience. A headset also comes with a built-in microphone, which allows for communication with other players. Other than audio quality, consider getting one that is wireless and has comfortable ear pads.
  • Webcam: Though not the biggest priority, a webcam can come in handy if you decide to stream your gameplay online. Choose a webcam that has good video quality, resolution, and low-light capabilities.

3. Prioritizing ergonomics

Serious gamers are furniture geeks, too. That’s because you need the perfect desk and chair to play comfortably for hours. Without prioritizing ergonomics, you might develop postural syndrome, which can be detrimental to your spine health.

  • Chair: The perfect gaming throne should be well-cushioned on the seat, the back, and the armrests. Choose one that is adjustable in terms of height and angle.
  • Desk: Finally, a good PC gaming desk should be sturdy, spacious, and adjustable. These factors ensure maximum comfort and will inevitably make sure you enjoy your gaming experience.
