Gold Nuggets are one of the rarest things in Animal Crossing New Horizons, this resource is very hard to find and you will have to smash a ton of rocks on your island to get your hands on a gold nugget. The best strategy is to eat fruit before you start smashing the rocks, and if you want to keep the rocks on your island you will have to use Nook Miles.
This will take you to a random island and here you can smash as many rocks as you want and have a better chance of getting the gold nugget.
Once you get your hands on the gold nugget though, there is still a bit of work left. You will now have to break a 100 of your shovels to get the recipe for the gold shovel.
Break whatever comes to your mind or whatever you deem is unnecessary, you can check how many shovels you have crafted in your Nook Miles Achievement record from your phone. Eventually, your character will come up with the recipe for the gold shovel by themselves.
