In the lands of Forgotten Realms, there are quite a few DnD creatures that you will come across and have the chance to interact with in BG3. One of the unique creatures amongst them is the Owlbear Cub which you will find pretty early in your playthrough of the campaign. These adorable and aggressive creatures are quite interesting to interact with and if you go about a certain way you can make one of the cubs your companion and keep it in your camp.
However, there are some decisions and checks that you will need to pass to make the Owlbear Cub one of your friends in Baldur’s Gate 3. Not to mention, players will have to face and deal with their mother at first. Since these creatures are known for their aggression the Owlbear may come off as quite intimidating in the game. With that being said, if you are looking forward to adding the creature to the list of friends you made along the way to Baldur’s Gate, then here is a guide you should check out further.
Where to Find Owlbear Cub Nest in BG3
Players will come across the Owlbear Cub in a cave northeast of the Blighted Village in Baldur’s Gate 3. We would suggest that you grind your way to level 3 or 4 to make things much easier. Inside the cave, you will come across the Owlbear nest where the creatures reside in.
Once you head inside the cave and approach the mother, a cutscene will playthrough, where you will have the option to puff out your chest and roar back, attack the mother, or use your wisdom skill in Animal Handling. Since you want to have the Owlbear Cub as a companion, you will have to avoid being aggressive towards the mother.
The rest of the options will reveal the Owlbear Cub hiding behind the mother in BG3. Depending on the situation, we would suggest you act friendly with the cub and not attack it. It is worth mentioning that any failed rolls or checks will lead the mother to be more hostile towards you. If the situation changes, players will need to focus so that they don’t do any harm to the cub. You can simply back away and walk out of the cave as you will come across the cub once more in the game.
How to Rescue Owlbear Cub in BG3
The next location where you will find the Owlbear Cub is the Goblin Camp in BG3. Players can head west from the Emerald Grove and through the forest to come across the entrance to the camp. You will need to pass certain perception checks to reveal the entrance.
Once inside, you will find the Owlbear Cub surrounded by Goblins in the camp. Interacting with the cub will let you have a conversation with Krolla in Baldur’s Gate 3. After talking to her about the sport named Chicken Chasing, she will guide her towards Volo the Bard.
Once everything is sorted, players will have the option to either play the game or simply say no to Krolla. To make things easier, we would suggest that you simply deny playing Chicken Chasing to Krolla. Both of the options will yield the same results in Baldur’s Gate 3 and this way it will save you time.
How to Recruit Owlbear Cub
To recruit the Owlbear Cub to the camp and make him your companion, players will have to interact with Krolla again and let her know that the Owlbear is coming with them. After which you will have the following options to roll in Baldur’s Gate 3:
- Intimidation
- Persuasion
- Purchase the Owlbear Cub for 500 Gold from Krolla
- Illithid Wisdom
You can easily intimidate or persuade Krolla or use your Illithid Powers to misguide her into thinking that you are a true soul. We would suggest that you save the game before trying to attempt the rolls and pass the checks in the game. For an easy way out you can purchase the cub in exchange for 500 Gold.
Once everything is done, you will come across the Owlbear Cub in your camp after a few nights. Players can then pass an Animal Handling check or attempt to feed the creature to maintain a good relationship with the creature. The Owlbear Cub will then return to your camp in BG3.
