You can counter EMMI by pressing the X-button before its attack connects. There are two scenarios where you can dodge EMMI’s attack if you get caught.

The first is the grab attack. Watch EMMI’s hand when it tries to grab you. Wait for the hand to open up and the light to flash. You also get a sound cue when the hand light flashes. At this exact moment press the X-button to counter it.

The second case is when you miss the hand counter. When you miss your first chance to counter EMMI will pin you on the ground and face you. Wait for its head to open up, when EMMI opens its head it will flash a light and a spike comes out of it. Press X-button here to launch the counter. Similar to the grab counter, when the head opens and spike comes out you will get a sound cue. You can use that to remember when to counter.

Once you do a successful parry EMMI will get stunned and you will get a small window to escape. However, if you fail to counter both the times, EMMI will kill you. Although it is highly recommended to avoid countering EMMI as much as possible, as it requires a lot of practice and even sheer luck at times to get the counter right.

That covers everything you need to know on how to counter EMMI in Metroid Dread and dodge using melee counter or parry. If you like playing this game be sure to check out our other guides on how to get morph ball and how to unlock gravity suit in Metroid Dread.
