One of the most interesting dilemmas in Baldur’s Gate 3 is if you should consume tadpoles. During the opening cutscene of the game, one of the Mind Flayers puts a parasite in your eye. So the game establishes from the start that it is something foreign and one that you need to get rid of. This is even backed by many other characters that you meet on your journey. But that can change as you progress the story.
Before you check the guide, there are going to be a few spoilers ahead for the game. So now that you have been warned, here is whether you should use tadpoles in BG3 or not.
What Happens If I Eat The Tadpole in BG3?
If you want to use Mind Flayer powers and eventually turn into one, then you should consume the Tadpoles in BG3. But if you want to have nothing to do with them, you can choose to avoid opening your mind to these parasites.
Depending on what type of interactions and ending you are trying to go for, you can choose to both consume tadpoles or not use them at all.
So, should you open my mind to the Tadpoles in Baldur’s Gate 3? Here is what happens in both scenarios.
Consuming Tadpoles
Consuming Tadpoles allows you to unlock and use Illitihid Powers. Once you unlock the Illitihid Power Tree, you will see there are three tiers of abilities in it. Each time you consume a Tadpole you unlock more powers connected to them in the Skill tree. And eventually, after you consume the Supreme Tadpole you will become a full-fledged Mind Flayer. This should also let you unlock the hidden achievement Ceremorphosis in the game.
Not Using Tadpoles
Not using Tadpoles is a completely fine way to play the game. This will also be approved by several of your party members. But not consuming them means losing out on Illitihid Powers.
When Can You Start Consuming Tadpoles in Baldur’s Gate 3?
You can start consuming Tadpoles after you use enough Ilithid prompts. Simply progress the story and as you play you will find them as dialogue options. Once you unlock the Ilithid Power Tree you can see its icon on the top right side of the screen. After you get this button you can start using Tadpoles in BG3.
That’s all on if you should consume Tadpoles in Baldur’s Gate 3. Since you are here you should also check out our guide on if you should let Astarion drink your blood.
