Grand Theft Auto 6 is the most anticipated gaming release since, well, GTA 5. It’s the reason many players are finally considering buying a current-generation console. Some skipped the PS5 and Xbox Series generation entirely, while others have been holding onto older hardware waiting for Rockstar’s next title. Now that GTA 6 is officially heading to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the big question is simple: which console should you buy for the best experience? The answer depends on your budget, expectations, and whether this title is the only game you’re planning to play.
Which Console to Buy for GTA 6?
If you’re purchasing a console mainly for GTA 6:
- PS5 Pro: Best choice if budget isn’t a concern and you want the strongest visual experience.
- PS5: Best overall value for most players.
- Xbox Series X: Great alternative if you prefer Xbox services and ecosystem.
- Xbox Series S: Cheapest way to play this game, but likely with the biggest visual and performance compromises.
PS5 Pro: The Best Choice for Graphics Enthusiasts
If you want the strongest console hardware available for GTA 6, the PS5 Pro is the obvious candidate. Rockstar hasn’t officially revealed performance details for each platform, but the Pro’s upgraded hardware should allow for better image quality, more advanced visual effects, and potentially smoother performance than the standard PS5. Whether that translates into a higher frame rate remains unknown, but the extra power will likely benefit one of the most technically demanding games ever released on consoles.
Buy a PS5 Pro if:
- You want the best possible console visuals.
- You own a high-end 4K television.
- You plan to play other future AAA games.
Skip it if:
- GTA 6 is the only game you’re buying the console for.
- You’re trying to keep costs reasonable.
For many players, the visual improvements may not justify the significant price difference compared to a standard PS5.
PS5
The PS5 is most likely to become the most popular platform for GTA 6, simply because it provides the best balance between performance and price. You’ll still get the full experience, fast loading times, modern hardware, and support for future Rockstar titles without paying the premium attached to the Pro model. If you’re upgrading from a PS4, the difference will feel massive regardless of whether they’re using a standard PS5 or PS5 Pro.
Buy a PS5 if:
- You want the best value.
- You plan to play other exclusives as well.
- You don’t need the absolute highest visual settings.
For most gamers, this is probably the smartest purchase.
Xbox Series X
The Xbox Series X should offer a GTA 6 experience that is very similar to the standard PS5. In my opinion, the Series X remains an extremely capable machine, and if you’ve built your library on Xbox or prefer Microsoft’s ecosystem, there’s little reason to switch platforms solely for the upcoming Rockstar title.
Buy a Series X if:
- Your existing games are already on Xbox.
- You prefer the Xbox controller and ecosystem.
- You want high-end performance without moving to PlayStation.
Performance differences between the PS5 and Series X will likely be minor unless Rockstar specifically optimizes one version better than the other.
Xbox Series S
Not everyone wants to spend a large amount of money just to play one game and that’s where the Xbox Series S becomes a good choice. It will almost certainly be the most affordable entry point for GTA 6 and gives players access to the same world, story, and online features as more expensive consoles. The trade-off is that visual quality and resolution will be lower compared to the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Series X.
Buy a Series S if:
- Budget is your biggest concern.
- You only want a console for GTA 6.
- Graphics aren’t your top priority.
If your goal is simply to experience this game without spending heavily, the Series S is difficult to beat.

Should You Buy a Console Just for GTA 6?
Surprisingly, the answer may be yes. Rockstar releases don’t happen often. GTA 5 launched in 2013, and players have waited well over a decade for the next entry. As we know, the next instalment will keep players engaged for years through updates, expansions, and online content. So, if you expect to spend hundreds of hours exploring the game, as well as multiple playthroughs, buying a console specifically for GTA 6 can be worth it.
