Alan Wake 2, the much-anticipated sequel to 2013’s action horror is finally out on all the platforms, and needless to say, there are quite a few gameplay changes that you will come across. For players looking to get familiar with everything first, this time around you will get to change difficulty and fiddle around with three levels accordingly. The three levels are Story, Normal, and Hard, with each of them offering a different style of gameplay. The second installment in the psychological horror series takes things even further with the Dark Presence hunting you down again.

Going forward in the campaign of the survival horror, you will come across increasingly difficult supernatural enemies. And unless you are familiar with all the mechanics, combat, etc switching the difficulty to a much easier mode will be your best bet in Alan Wake 2. Players can simply change the difficulty in Alan Wake 2 by pausing the game and heading towards the main menu. You can do this by pressing the Menu Button on the Xbox controller or the Options Button on the PS5 controller in the game. PC players can simply press the ESC key on their keyboard to pause and enter the main menu. After which, here are the steps you can follow:

  • Pause Alan Wake 2 and enter the main menu.
  • Here, select the Difficulty option from the menu.
  • After which you will be able to select from the three modes namely Story, Normal, and Hard.
    • Story: Combat will not pose a challenge. Focus on mystery solving and exploration.
    • Normal: A balance between mystery-solving & survival. Combat is challenging. Using items and conserving resources is required to stay alive.
    • Hard: Significantly challenging combat. Leveraging items & familiarity with the game mechanics is essential for survival.
    • Nightmare: Unlocked in New Game+, once you have completed the game.

Once you select and change the difficulty in Alan Wake 2, you will have a particular style of combat and gameplay. You can switch to different settings accordingly in the game.
