There are three ways to play Animal Crossing New Horizons, first is solo, the second is Party Play which is a local co-op and the last one is online. For online you will need access to Nintendo Switch Online. But to play in a group of 4 you just need all the players with their Switch and game.
For Local co-op mode, you have to set up your island first. Complete the starting mission of setting up your island, tent, and everything. Go to sleep and the next day you can use the option of Party Play.

How to use Party Play and invite friends?

Whatever items they collect will be sent to Recycle Box. Visit Resident Services to collect them. Followers will use D-pad Up to Equipe or Swap Tools. While Leaders can use all the controls.
As a leader, the main camera will follow you in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Followers will spawn near you even if they are left behind. The Leader is only allowed to shop in the Party Mode, but he can share inventory with other players.
