With a corresponding attachment on the back, the DualShock 4 controller could be expanded with freely programmable buttons on the back. According to a recent patent, a similar attachment could also appear for the PS5’s DualSense controller of Sony.
In response to the Xbox Elite Controller and similar gaming pads, Sony Interactive Entertainment released a back button extension for the DualShock 4.
This could be attached to the back of the PlayStation 4 controller. The expansion offered players the opportunity to expand the DualShock 4 with freely programmable buttons. According to current rumors, the DualSense controller of the Sony’s PS5 could get a similar expansion. This is at least suggested by a new patent from Sony Interactive Entertainment that has now found its way to the public.
The description of the said patent states the following: “A controller add-on includes a housing that mechanically couples to a game controller body. A conformable surface of the housing is configured to conform with a bottom of the body of the game controller. A plurality of buttons coupled to the housing are located opposite the conformable surface. A controller interface coupled to the housing is configured to communicatively couple to the plurality of buttons to the game controller.”
And further, it continues: “Buttons on the add-on may be mapped to controller buttons using customized button mapping pre-sets. A button mapping may indicate that a selected preset is to be hidden during a switching operation Upon receiving a switching operation input, the selected pre-set is skipped during the switching operation.”
Since an official announcement is still pending, it remains to be seen whether and when the DualSense will actually be given a back button extension. If there are any specific details in this regard, we will of course bring you up to date information immediately.
