SM2 was a modded Call of Duty Client developed by a small group of independent developers. This mod was basically a compilation of several features from across all the COD titles into one game. And surprisingly, it was able to draw a majority of attention in its favor. This eventually became a matter of concern for Activision. So what exactly is COD SM2, and why is it being shut down by Activision? Here’s everything you should know.
What is COD SM2?
Call of Duty SM2 was a mod that added features and mechanics from different COD games into one game. The developers used the IW4 engine (used in the original Modern Warfare 2 as well) to run this game. However, due to technical issues, developers decided to make a transition from IW4 to the H1 engine (used in MW2 Remastered).
There were several all-in-one features in COD SM2 that were brought back from different other Call of Duty games. A few of them were:
- Over 100 Weapons with camos and attachments.
- The Black Ops currency and Wager Matches.
- 24 New and Returning Perks.
This was just a gist of what COD SM2 was offering to the players.
Why is Activision Shutting Down Call of Duty SM2?
SM2 was teased and announced back in 2021. Since then, players have been eagerly waiting to get their hands on this “Ultimate COD Experience.” Later in April 2023, developers announced the change in the game engine from IW4 to H1. Right after a month, one of the developer’s team members received a Cease and Desist Letter from Activision.
Today, a team member received a Cease & Desist letter on behalf of Activision Publishing in relation to the sm² project. We are complying with this order and shutting down all operations permanently. Thank you all for your support over the past 2 years.

Just when we thought that the FPS experience is about to peak, Activision shut down the COD SM2. Maybe the reason for SM2 being canned is because of their shift to the H1 engine. The latest COD Modern Warfare 2 uses the same engine. And that’s why Activision sent the legal notice to end the SM2 project.
Unfortunately, the fan-favorite Call of Duty SM2 is now scrapped and can never be experienced again. In case you are playing COD Warzone 2 or Modern Warfare 2, then we have a bunch of informative guides stacked up for you here at Gamer Tweak. So make sure to check them out.
