Baldur’s Gate 3 gives players a memorable cast of companions to adventure with, each with their own personality. One of the most beloved companions is the heroic ranger Minsc. If you want the mighty Minsc and his miniaturized giant space hamster Boo to join your party, you must complete a specific quest line. In this guide, you’ll learn how to recruit Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
Where to Find Minsc in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Minsc is an iconic companion you can recruit in Baldur’s Gate 3, but he becomes available later in the game. After recruiting Jaheira at the end of Act 2, you should follow her companion quest called The Harper Commander. This will eventually lead the party to cross paths with Minsc in the Lower City area of Baldur’s Gate.
You must complete the main quest in Act 3, which leads them to the city of Baldur’s Gate. Once in the city, you must have Jaheira in their party, as she is a former companion of Minsc and is needed to recruit him. It’s important not to encounter Minsc before finishing Jaheira’s quest, as this can result in his death and Jaheira permanently leaving the party.
How To Recruit Minsc In BG3?
You’ll find that Minsc is in the Sewers during The Harper Commander quest. His location is in the Abandoned Cistern, which can be found in the sewers to the far west side of Lower City.
Solve the Sluice Gate Puzzle
When you arrive, you’ll need to solve a valve puzzle to raise the water and temperature levels simultaneously. Time your valve clicks carefully to open the sluice gate.
- Choose a character to interact with the valves. Using only one character avoids multiple party members taking damage if something goes wrong.
- Approach the water valve. An indicator light on the valve will illuminate.
- Wait for the indicator light to fill. Only interact with the valve once the light is solidly lit.
- Once the water valve indicator is fully lit, interact with the temperature lever.
- Wait for the temperature and water valve indicators to reach the proper positions.
When you enter the cistern, a battle will ensue with Minsc and his allies. You must defeat all of them, but Minsc must be incapacitated using non-lethal melee attacks. This prevents him from dying, which would make Jaheira leave permanently.
Dialogue Options To Protect Minsc’s Mind
After winning the fight, dialogue options will appear. Select responses that have the Absolute protect Minsc’s mind from being controlled. This allows him to join you as a free-willed companion. If done correctly, Minsc will smash through a wall, and you’ll meet his hamster Boo.
