The PS5 was released in November 2020 and now PlayStation fans have started being curious about the next-gen console and what could be the potential PS6 release date. While PS5 is still going strong with its new additions of PS5 Slim and PlayStation Portal, are there any leaks, rumors, and speculations about the PS6?
PS6 Release Date Rumors and Speculation
The gap between the release of the PS4 and PS5 was 7 years, with PS4 Slim and PS4 releasing in middle, in 2016. Prior to that, the PS3 came out in 2006 and PS4 in 2013 making the gap 7 years as well. While it’s not a pattern that can confirm anything, based on historical trends we can expect the PS6 release date to be somewhere around 2026-2027.
As of today, there is no official confirmed release date for the PlayStation 6 via Sony. Some Sony executives have mentioned the planned longevity of the PS5 which could suggest that the PS6 could come out much after 2027.
Leaks and industry insider insights offer various dates ranging from 2026 to 2028, but with no concrete confirmation, so take those rumors with a grain of salt.
Is there any PlayStation 6 Release Date Leak?
However, there is something we can consider a PS6 release date ‘leak’ and that’s the document related to the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger. It appears that Sony isn’t going to release a new PlayStation console until after 2027. This is a document that Sony has submitted to the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
It reads that Microsoft “has offered to continue making Activision’s games available on PlayStation only until 2027.” Further ahead, it says, “By the time SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around [redacted]), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness.”
This gives us an idea about the PS6 release date that it could be in 2028. However, this may not be concrete information and may change in the future.
It has been noted that Sony has filed trademarks for PS6 through PS10 which secures future branding options but does not provide any other data about the next PlayStation.

Of course, this could differ based on the situation the gaming and console industry is in that year. Technology is moving ahead at a rapid pace and we never know what could be the state of PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC gaming during that time. It remains to be seen how AR, VR, and AI will change the game too.
So what can we expect in the PS6?
Rumors suggest hardware upgrades like improved CPU and GPU performance, ray tracing enhancements, and higher resolution capabilities. There are also whispers of VR advancements, integration with AI-powered technologies, and innovative controller functionalities. That’s not all – a slimmer console and revamped UI are being speculated too.
We will keep an eye on Sony’s channels for any hints, leaks, updates, or announcements and update you right here. However, we might have to wait quite a bit because the PS5 as a brand still feels very new and fresh.
