Even in the new generation of consoles, gamers are often given the option of upgrading the PS4 version of cross-generation titles to the PS5 version free of charge. But what will become of the PS4 version of your games when you upgrade?
In a few weeks, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will finally herald the new generation of consoles. Just as it was the case with the last generation change, this time too, players are offered the opportunity to upgrade their cross-generation titles to the respective next-generation version free of charge in many cases. But what happens to your PS4 version if you upgrade to the PS5 version?
At the request of a user, the official customer service of Sony Interactive Entertainment replied on this topic. Even if the relevant employee was unable to make a binding statement, he is sure that access to the PS4 version will be retained even after the upgrade to the PS5 version.
“Since the PS4 and PS5 copies will be separate, and the PS5 copy is a complimentary access to that platform; you should still retain access to the progress and data for PS4. In essence, it’s like having two copies: One for each platform,” he says.
It should be noted, however, that these statements only apply to the digital versions of the games. If you upgrade a physical version to the next-generation version, you will have to keep your retail copy, as this is required as a kind of copy protection when the game is started. In this way, developers and publishers want to prevent games and the associated upgrades from being passed on in an uncontrolled manner.
The PlayStation 5 will be released on November 12, 2020.
