Mortal Kombat 1 Characters or MK1 Roster 2023 was the first thing I looked up when the new game’s trailer was revealed. I am sure many of the fans did the same. In 1992, when the first Mortal Kombat game was launched, it just had a lineup of 7 playable characters. This roster grew to over 80 characters introduced throughout the games. These characters have evolved into gaming icons, making their own legacy and cultural impact on the gaming community.
Mortal Kombat, as a series, has achieved worldwide fame for over three decades. Besides creating over 20 games in the series, this franchise has inspired three significant movies, two TV shows, animated films, graphic novels, comic books, and even a trading card game.
Mortal Kombat characters are more than just game characters for most of us. We have fallen in love with their personalities, quirky dialogues, their fatalities, lore, and much more. So knowing the character roster of the new game in the series is important for us. So here is the complete list of all Mortal Kombat 1 Characters or MK1 Roster with their images.

Mortal Kombat 1 Reboot Lore Changes & MK1 Character Bios
SPOILER WARNING: The following segment contains spoilers for the Mortal Kombat 1 story and lore. If you are excited to find out the lore for yourself, please do not continue to read ahead. Please return to the article once you are bit ahead in the story or finished the campaign mode to clear up any doubts.
Liu Kang
In the series, Liu Kang is a Shaolin monk. He is one of the significant characters of the franchise. Being a skilled fighter and one of the best in Earthrealm, he becomes the beacon of hope for Earthrealmers.
In previous games, he is trained by Raiden (God of Thunder) to represent Earthrealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament. But in Mortal Kombat 1, the roles are reversed. Now Liu Kang is the God of Fire (after absorbing the powers of the previous Raiden), who has chosen Raiden from the new timeline, a normal farmer, to become the champion of Earthrealm.
He’s a strong fighter who always stands up for what’s right. Fans love him, and he’s been in almost every Mortal Kombat game. Liu Kang appeared as NPC in MK: Deadly Alliance and a cameo in MK: Tournament Edition. Apart from these two games, he was the main protagonist in most of the games in the franchise.
In most timelines, he is the Mortal Kombat Tournament Champion. Throughout the series, his story evolves when he becomes the destined protector of Earthrealm and even becomes the current Keeper of Time (after the events of MK 11).
Having won control of the Hourglass in Mortal Kombat 11 (2019), Liu Kang restarted the entire universe in Mortal Kombat 1 (2023). Liu Kang created a new timeline in which Outworld would not be a danger to Earthrealm again. He removed all the dangers and issues Earth faced. So as per his experience, this timeline should not have enemies they faced before, such as Shao Kahn, Shinnok, and Quan Chi. In this new timeline, all beings from all realms could find peace without the tournament.
However, evil has risen that Liu Kang could never predict. This new threat is far more dangerous than Shao Kahn or anything they ever faced before. Now Liu Kang has to combine his wisdom and prior experience to save Earthrealm and this new reality he created together.
Being the eternal God of Fire, Liu Kang must find his allies from previous timelines. He must find Raiden and Kung Lao in Fengjian Village, China. Liu Kang now must train Raiden as Earthrealm champion in this new timeline. Then together, they could face a new evil and defend Earthrealm. He will not allow this new evil to destroy the peace he has worked so hard to create at any cost.
Scorpion
Scorpion is the most famous ninja from the Mortal Kombat series. Scorpion has appeared in every Mortal Kombat game from the original release. He is one of the franchise’s most loved characters. His signature phrase, “Get over here!” is one of the most-known gaming quotes ever.
Scorpion is set on a path of revenge against Sub-Zero, whom he blames for losing his family. He has deadly fighting skills, along with the ability to manipulate fire. He can exhale fire, create fireballs, and even teleport short distances. After his death, he walks the land of living in his spirit form.
Before his death, Scorpion was a human named Hanzo Hasashi, who led the Shirai Ryu clan. During a clan war, Sub-Zero from the Lin Kuei clan managed to kill Hanzo. Later the evil necromancer sorcerer Quan Chi raises Scorpion as a spirit after killing his family. He manipulates Scorpion into believing that Sub-Zero killed his family. This sets off one of the most famous stories of rivalry and revenge in gaming. In MK1, we will see Scorpion and Sub-Zero working together (a few times before in the series) for a common goal.
In the new MK1 timeline, the Scorpion is not the same Scorpion that fans know and love. Kuai Liang, the younger brother of Bi-Han, has taken up the mantle of Scorpion in the new history, replacing Hanzo Hasashi, the original Scorpion. In this altered timeline, Bi-Han has reverted to his Sub-Zero iteration.
They were raised to be warriors, and they have always been close. But now, their loyalty to Lin Kuei is being tested.
So Kuai Liang is the new pyromancer instead of his previous cryomancer role in other timelines. Kuai Liang has abilities the same as Hanzo’s Scorpion iteration. This includes teleportation, wielding kunai, executing fire-infused attacks, and the ability to control fire at will.
Kuai Liang still hates Bi-Han regarding his vision of the clan’s future. But Kuai Liang also tries to understand why his brother became so reckless. He knows that Bi-Han was under a lot of pressure from the Lin Kuei, and he wants to find a way to prevent other young warriors from making the same mistakes.
Scorpion is a traditionalist. He believes that Lin Kuei should be dedicated to defending Earthrealm. He is proud of his father’s legacy and wants to uphold it.
Sub-Zero is more progressive. He believes that Lin Kuei should adapt to the changing times. He sees the potential for the clan to become more powerful if they are willing to embrace new strategies; they could rule the whole Earthrealm.
These two visions for the future of Lin Kuei conflict. Scorpion fears that Sub-Zero’s changes will lead the clan astray. He believes that Sub-Zero is putting the clan’s interests above the needs of Earthrealm.
Sub-Zero, for his part, believes that Scorpion is being narrow-minded. He believes Lin Kuei can only survive if they are willing to change. He is determined to lead the clan into a new era of prosperity.
The conflict between Scorpion and Sub-Zero will soon come to a head. One must give in, or Lin Kuei will be torn apart.
Sub-Zero
The mantle of Sub-Zero belongs to two brothers in the Mortal Kombat series. Bi-Han was the first Sub-Zero. Then, after his death, his younger brother Kuai Liang became the new Sub-Zero. Bi-Han returns to the tournament as Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat II (1993) and Elder Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat (2011). In MK1, Bi-Han will return as the Sub-Zero instead of Kuai Liang.
Both Sub-Zero incarnations are strong fighters who can master various weapons apart from being cryomancers. Some of Sub-Zero’s abilities are making ice clones, firing ice beams from hands, freezing enemies, and teleporting short distances like Scorpion.
Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero, is now the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei. He is a changed man from the cold-blooded, vicious assassin he once was. He is now a wise and compassionate leader dedicated to protecting Earthrealm.
However, Bi-Han is also a pragmatist. He knows that Earthrealm has not been threatened in generations, but he also knows that the world is a dangerous place. He believes Lin Kuei must be prepared for anything, even if it means coming out of the shadows and fighting to rule Earthrealm.
Bi-Han’s decision to lead Lin Kuei into open conflict is controversial. Some clan members, like his brother Kuai Liang (Scorpion), believe he is betraying their ancient traditions. Others believe that he is doing what is necessary to protect Earthrealm.
Only time will tell whether Bi-Han’s decision was the right one. But one thing is certain; Lin Kuei will never be the same under his leadership.
Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage is a Hollywood actor who’s good at fighting. He has many cool moves and can do tricks like acrobatics from his stunt work. Being a total extrovert, he likes to put on a show for his fans and can even shoot green energy blasts with his hands.
Even though he can be focused on stuff, not always serious, and sometimes acts like a kid, Cage is still a courageous and trustworthy fighter. Johnny Cage, whose real name is Jonathan Carlton, was a Hollywood actor trying to make a comeback to movies by joining the Mortal Kombat tournament to show off his fighting abilities. He wanted to show the world he was a real stuntman and never faked his fighting abilities. He believed the Mortal Kombat tournament was his ticket back to success.
Johnny Cage is one of the first characters made for the first Mortal Kombat game. He is created to be different from the other characters, mostly dark and serious in the series. Basically, his addition adds fun to the Mortal Kombat universe. That’s why fans think of him as the main funny character in the series.
In the new Mortal Kombat 1 timeline, Johnny Cage is still an action movie star with the same muscular body and tight pants, and his sunglasses are still a part of his look. The only difference is that he is a 21st-century action movie star now.
Once a famous actor, he had it all: fame, fortune, and the adoration of fans. But now Johnny is struggling. He is no longer the talented actor he once was; even his movies are stale. This costs him his fame, and his fans are moving towards new actors.
His addiction to fame made him forget what is truly important in life. He has lost touch with reality, and he has become increasingly isolated. Johnny knows he needs to do something about his career but is unsure how. He is afraid of losing all his fame and living a meaningless life.
Then Johnny meets Liu Kang, the God of Fire and protector of Earthrealm. Liu Kang tells Johnny he needs to use his fighting skills to help Earthrealm instead of focusing on fame. Liu Kang offers him a chance to join him as one of Earthrealm’s champions. Johnny is initially hesitant, but Liu Kang’s words inspire him, and he joins him.
He knows this is dangerous, but he will do whatever it takes to boost his career. He believes being an Earthrealm champion will bring him fame, and his fans will start to love him again.
Raiden
Raiden is the God of Thunder and gets even stronger as an Elder God. He’s one of the mightiest beings around. He mentors Earthrealm’s heroes in previous games, especially Liu Kang and Kung Lao. But in Mortal Kombat 1, things change.
In the new Mortal Kombat 1 timeline, Raiden and Liu Kang have swapped roles. Liu Kang is now the God of Fire, while Raiden is a mortal Earthrealm champion that Liu Kang must train to combat a new threat. This version of Raiden grew up as a field worker in the village of Fengjian alongside Kung Lao.
In his village, Raiden is known for his kindness and his charity. He is happy to spend his days tending to the fields, friends, and family. He is also a skilled martial artist but has never used his skills for violence.
So when he is asked to leave Fengjian and become one of Earthrealm’s champions, Raiden hesitates. He does not want to leave his home or his loved ones. But he soon realizes that to serve best his family and those he loves; he must follow Liu Kang.
As threats to Earthrealm rises, Raiden must mature into the great warrior that Liu Kang knows he can be. He must learn to harness his anger and power and be willing to fight for what he believes in.
Raiden’s journey is one of self-discovery and growth. He must learn to accept his new role as a champion and embrace his role as the great warrior of Earthrealm.
Kitana
Princess Kitana is over 10,000 years old but still looks like a young woman because of the Edenian way of life. She was raised to be an assassin for Shao Kahn, and she was initially cold, arrogant, and ruthless. However, after meeting Liu Kang and the other Earthrealm warriors, she softened and became more compassionate. She eventually joined their team and fought alongside them to protect Earthrealm.
In this new Mortal Kombat 1 timeline, Kitana is the younger twin to Mileena. Despite suggestions from others that she should take her sister’s place due to her impulsiveness, Kitana remains fiercely loyal to Mileena.
Kitana’s main focus is on helping Mileena become a capable empress. She believes her role is to support and safeguard her sister as she prepares to rule Outworld.
Determined to shield Mileena, Kitana works diligently to keep her sister’s infection with the “Tarkat” virus hidden from others. If this dark secret were to come to light, it could affect Mileena’s reign before it even begins.
Mileena
Mileena is like a mix made by a wizard named Shang Tsung. She’s part Kitana and part Tarkatan, which means she’s one of Emperor Shao Kahn’s chosen daughters. He likes her a lot and uses her as his top assassin.
Mileena got Kitana’s beauty and Tarkatans’ sharp teeth and claws. She’s super quick and strong. She’s good at fighting without weapons or with them. Mileena is tough, never gives up, and wants to make her father figure, Shao Kahn, proud.
Mileena was born mere seconds before her twin sister Kitana, making her the rightful heir to Outworld’s throne. However, she is also infected with the Tarkat disease, a deadly and feared illness. If her secret were revealed, Mileena would be forced to fight for her rightful place, and she knows she would not be victorious.
So Mileena keeps her secret close, even from her sister. She relies on Kitana’s help to keep her safe, but some still distrust Mileena’s impulsiveness. They whisper that Kitana should be the heir to the throne instead.
Baraka
Baraka is a Tarkatan warlord and one of the most feared warriors in the Outworld. He is a loyal servant of Shao Kahn and Mileena, always eager to fight for them. As you see, he is a monstrous creature with sharp teeth and claws. He is incredibly strong and agile, armed with two long blades that protrude from his arms. These blades make him a deadly opponent, and he is known for his brutal fighting style.
Baraka is also a skilled tactician and leader. He can rally the Tarkatan horde and lead them to victory. He is a valuable asset to Shao Kahn’s army and a formidable opponent to anyone who stands in his way.
Baraka was once a respected Outworld merchant, but his life changed forever after contracting the Tarkat plague. This incurable and contagious disease turned him into a monster, and he was cast out to live in a colony of similarly afflicted Outworlders.
When Baraka first arrived, the colony was in disarray. His fellow Tarkatans had given up and were ready to die. But Baraka refused to give up. He knew that he would never truly be a victim as long as he fought.
Baraka spared no effort to better the lives of his fellow Tarkatans. He organized, led, and inspired them never to give up hope. Under his leadership, the colony was transformed from despair to a stronghold of strength and resilience.
Kenshi Takahashi
Kenshi Takahashi is a blind swordsman, but he’s got special powers like telekinesis and psychokinesis. He’s Takeda Takahashi’s dad and helps the Special Forces in their missions. He wants revenge against Shang Tsung, who made him blind and hurt his wife.
Kenshi was born in Japan and was taught to be a samurai. He got good at sword fighting when he was young. But when he was 20, Shang Tsung made him blind. But this only made Kenshi stronger. He trained even more and learned to use his other senses instead of sight.
As time passed, Kenshi got strong and joined the Special Forces to fight against Shang Tsung and other dangers to Earthrealm. He’s a really important team member and is known for being calm and skillful at sword fighting.
Kung Lao
Kung Lao is a skilled Shaolin warrior who uses a razor-rimmed hat as his weapon. He is a proud and noble fighter who fights for peace and justice. Being born into the White Lotus Society and trained from a young age, Kung Lao dreamed of following in his great ancestor’s footsteps but was defeated by Shang Tsung in the 2011 Mortal Kombat tournament. This defeat was a turning point for Kung Lao, and he eventually became a powerful warrior and a respected member of the White Lotus Society.
Reptile
Reptile is a green-skinned humanoid reptile originally a hybrid of Sub-Zero and Scorpion. He is obsessed with finding the last remaining member of his race, the Saurians, or freeing his homeworld of Zaterra from Outworld’s grasp.
Reptile’s exact age is unknown, but it is likely tens of thousands or even millions of years old. His race, the Saurians, were forced to flee Earthrealm after a battle between the gods nearly destroyed it. They found refuge in the realm of Zaterra, but Zaterra was later invaded and conquered by Outworld’s emperor, Shao Kahn. Most of the Saurians were killed in the ensuing battles, but a few, including Reptile, survived.
Shao Kahn did not enslave Reptile like the other Saurians. Instead, he was trained to serve Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung. He is a skilled warrior and assassin and can also use the powers of invisibility and acid spit. Reptile is a complex and ambiguous, and his true loyalties are often unclear. He is sometimes a villain, an antihero, and even a hero.
Rain
Rain is a demigod, the son of the god Argus, and an Edenian woman. He is a skilled warrior and a powerful sorcerer who can control water and lightning. He is also a cunning and ambitious prince who seeks to rule Outworld.
Rain is angry with his father for the death of his mother, and he believes that Argus is responsible for her death. He also wants to avenge her death by taking control of Outworld.
Rain is a formidable opponent who can use his powers to create powerful storms and lightning strikes. He can also trap his enemies in water balls, making them his prisoners.
Smoke
Tomas Vrbada, also known as Smoke and Enenra, was a Lin Kuei ninja who was transformed into a cyborg. He did not have his own story until Mortal Kombat 3, where he was depicted as a human trapped in a cyborg body. He was unhappy with his new form and often expressed sadness about it.
Smoke’s defining characteristic is that he is always surrounded by smoke. He can also teleport and disappear, which makes him a stealthy and powerful ninja for Lin Kuei.
Li Mei
Li Mei first appeared as a warrior from Outworld who wanted to get back at Shang Tsung and Quan Chi for destroying her village. She’s good at fighting and knows martial arts. Li Mei is a strong and brave woman with a lot of depth, and is one of the most popular characters in the MK1 Roster.
Tanya
Tanya is a treacherous and deceiving Edenian who always looks out for herself. She is a master of manipulation and deception and is always willing to betray her allies if it means furthering her own goals.
Tanya was originally introduced as an innocent Edenian seeking to protect her people from Shinnok. However, she was quickly revealed to be a worshiper of Shinnok and an ally of the Brotherhood of Shadow. After Shinnok’s defeat, she served Shao Kahn, the Deadly Alliance, and Onaga.
Tanya seems to view herself as a survivor more than anything else. She justifies her choices as for her survival, regardless of the cost to others. She is a complex and morally ambiguous character who is always a threat to those around her.
Geras
Geras is an immortal, artificial construct created by Kronika, the former Keeper of Time. He is a loyal and powerful servant of Kronika, possessing god-like strength and the ability to manipulate the sands of time.
This character’s most notable attribute is his imperviousness to death. He can recover from all wounds, even fatal ones, within minutes. Geras has died thousands of times, each coming back stronger and wiser.
Geras is a formidable opponent and a key part of Kronika’s plan to restore order to the universe. He is a skilled fighter who can use his powers to manipulate the sands of time to his advantage. He can also create constructs of sand to fight for him, and he can even turn his opponents into sand. He is a loyal servant of Kronika but also capable of independent thought. A powerful warrior, but also a tragic figure who is trapped in a cycle of death and rebirth.
Alongside his new master Liu Kang, Geras is now one of the two Keepers of Time, responsible for guarding the timelines.
Havik
Havik is a Cleric of Chaos from the Chaosrealm. He is an anarchist who seeks to spread discord and chaos. He is not good or evil and will ally himself with anyone who can help him achieve his goals.
Havik is a frequent troublemaker in Seido, the Realm of Order. He is known for his unpredictable behavior and willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals. He is also a skilled fighter and a powerful sorcerer.
Havik opposes the Dragon King, Onaga, who rules by order. He also rivals Hotaru, the Seidan guardsman. Havik believes that Onaga and Hotaru represent the forces of Order he opposes.
Ashrah
Ashrah is a mysterious and elegant demon from the Netherrealm. She appears tall, slender with long, flowing hair and piercing blue eyes. Always dressed in white, Ashrah strives to symbolize her purity to everyone around her. She is a powerful warrior who wields a kris, a dagger with mystical powers. Being a skilled sorcerer, she can use her magic to heal the curse and even purify the corrupted. Even though she is a demon, she is also a force for good – she is trying to redeem herself for her past sins.
