Loot Boxes Return to Overwatch 2 After Two Years of Absence

Updated Date :

With the launch of Season 15, Overwatch 2 has brought back a mechanic many considered gone for good. Loot boxes a defining feature of the original Overwatch are once again available to players. Randomized rewards can now be earned for free through weekly challenges or via the Battle Pass, with no mandatory spending required in this free-to-play game.

Below are all the practical details on how the updated system works, which items drop, and under what conditions.

Free Loot Boxes Every Week Without Spending

The weekly system is straightforward. Each player can earn up to three loot boxes per week by completing up to 27 matches. Wins count as double progress, noticeably speeding up the path to a reward. Since Overwatch 2 remains free-to-play, standard loot boxes are accessible without any financial investment.

This means even casual players who log in for a few matches on weekends can accumulate cosmetic items without purchasing a premium track.

The Battle Pass Adds Legendary Boxes

Beyond weekly matches, loot boxes also appear in the Battle Pass. The free track includes one Legendary loot box. The premium track offers two additional Legendary boxes, making the paid pass more appealing for collectors of rare content.

In practice, the Battle Pass functions as an additional reward source on top of the weekly system, rather than a replacement for it.

Where to Find and How to Open Loot Boxes

The opening process is intuitive. From the main menu, navigate to the Loot Boxes section, which displays the number of opened and remaining boxes. The game offers two options: open them one at a time to enjoy each individual reveal, or open all unopened boxes at once.

Seasonal Reset and Auto-Opening

There is an important detail tied to seasonal rules. At the start of each new season, progress resets. Any loot boxes left unopened at the end of a season are opened automatically, and the rewards appear in the player’s inventory. Saving boxes to accumulate them across seasons is not possible.

Sprays, Voice Lines, and Echoes of Past Seasons

Each loot box contains four randomized items. Possible rewards include:

  • sprays
  • voice lines
  • victory poses
  • other cosmetic items

The pool draws from content across past seasons of both Overwatch and Overwatch 2. A standard loot box guarantees at least one Rare item. A Legendary loot box also drops four items, but the key distinction is that a Legendary item is guaranteed within it.

The Pity System and Progress Tracker

The developers have built in guarantees for opening streaks. At least one Epic item drops every five consecutive openings, and at least one Legendary appears every 20 boxes. The progress tracker is displayed directly in the loot box menu, making it easy to monitor how close the next guaranteed reward is.

Drop Rates for Standard Loot Boxes

  • Legendary: 5.1%
  • Epic: 21.93%
  • Rare: 96.26%
  • Common: 97.97%

Drop Rates for Legendary Loot Boxes

  • Legendary: 100%
  • Epic: 21.93%
  • Rare: 96.26%
  • Common: 97.97%

Why Loot Boxes Were Removed and Why They Are Back

In the lead-up to the launch of Overwatch 2, the gaming industry was facing a wave of regulatory pressure. Several governments began classifying loot boxes as gambling mechanics, and Blizzard took the radical step of removing randomized rewards entirely, replacing them with a Battle Pass offering predictable cosmetic drop rates.

However, a significant portion of the community viewed the new system as less generous compared to the original Overwatch. The return of loot boxes in Season 15 expands free customization options, though it is worth noting that earning boxes is no longer as easy as it was in the first game.

It is worth recalling that loot boxes were not removed without reason. Regulators in several countries, including Belgium and the Netherlands, explicitly classified paid randomized rewards as gambling mechanics. The concerns centered on a lack of drop rate disclosures and the psychological resemblance to slot machines. Notably, that resemblance to gambling does not disappear even when loot boxes require no payment. The same logic applies to, for example, australian casinos with no deposit bonuses, where players are not required to deposit their own money in the early stages. It is no surprise that this approach brought niche entertainment into the mainstream. In practice, however, the situation is far more complex, as gambling mechanics continue to make their way into traditional video games.

Nevertheless, Blizzard determined it was viable to bring the system back by making boxes entirely free and embedding transparent drop rate disclosures within them. In effect, the developers are using loot boxes as an additional reward channel rather than a monetization tool, which is what allows the system to navigate the primary regulatory restrictions.
