Is That Pokemon Booster Box Worth Opening? What the Pull Math Says

Published Date :

Opening a booster box is one of the best feelings in the hobby. Thirty-six packs, a whole evening, and the chance that this is the box with the chase card in it. Then you get to the bottom of the box, add up what you pulled, and realize you paid $300 for about $120 of cards.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not unlucky. That’s roughly how the math works for almost every modern set. You can usually tell before you cut the shrink wrap whether a box is worth ripping or worth keeping sealed.

How box value is calculated

Pokemon Booster Box

There are two numbers that matter. The first is what the box costs. The second is the average value of the cards you’d pull from it, based on the pull rates for each rarity and the current sold price of every card in the set.

CardTrack runs this calculation for every current set on its Pokémon booster box value page, using its pack model for the pull rates and taking about 13% off the card values for eBay selling fees. That last part matters. A card worth $50 only puts about $43 in your pocket after you sell it.

Current sets, ranked

This is how the recent English sets compared on 16 October 2026. “Average pulls” is the modelled value of a full 36-pack box. The last column shows that value, after selling fees, as a percentage of what the box costs.

SetBox priceAverage pullsPulls after fees vs box
Pitch Black$182$13866%
Chaos Rising$182$10952%
Phantasmal Flames$394$23151%
Journey Together$193$11351%
Perfect Order$172$8945%
Surging Sparks$298$11734%
Mega Evolution$304$10931%
Destined Rivals$403$13228%

Not one of them comes close to 100%. The best set on the list, Pitch Black, still loses you about a third of your money on an average box. Destined Rivals loses you nearly three quarters.

The chase card is the whole bet

So why does anyone open boxes? Because the average hides the top. In Phantasmal Flames, a single Mega Charizard X ex is worth about $675, well over the $394 box price. In Destined Rivals, the Team Rocket’s Mewtwo ex at around $400 roughly covers the whole box on its own.

That’s what you’re paying for when you open: a lottery ticket on one card. If you hit, you win. Most boxes don’t.

Older sets are worse, not better

You’d think older boxes would be better value because the chase cards have climbed. It’s usually the opposite. The box price climbs faster. A sealed Evolving Skies box costs about $2,190, and the average pulls come to about $340. The famous Umbreon VMAX is worth about $2,000, so even the best possible pull doesn’t cover the box.

Once a set goes out of print, sealed boxes become a collectible in their own right, and opening one means destroying the thing that was worth the money.

So should you open it?

If you’re opening for fun, absolutely, and don’t feel bad about it. Ripping packs is a hobby, and hobbies cost money. Just go in knowing the average result is a loss.

If you’re opening to make money, the math is against you on every current set. If there’s one card you want, buy the single. It’s almost always cheaper than chasing it.

And if you have an older box sitting sealed on a shelf, leave it there. Its value as a sealed box is almost always higher than what’s inside.
