To put it straight forward, your team needs to be at a complete halt so that spellcasters such as Wizards and Clerics can prepare their spells. This means that any of your team members should not be actively performing any actions. The location is not important to be able to prepare spells. You can be in the middle of any quest, wilderness, or even in any hostile territory. The only thing that matters is that you and your team should be at a halt.
Once this is checked, you can enter the UI for preparing spells in Baldur’s Gate 3. To do this, open spellbook and head to the spells option. From here, you can view all the spells that are already prepared. The ones that are ready at disposal are the highlighted ones, while the rest are greyed out.
If there are any empty slots remaining, you can prepare new spells; however, if there are no empty slots you will have to switch between spells. You can switch any of the prepared spells with the greyed ones to prepare them. All you need to do is click on the spell that you want to replace and then select the spell that you want it to be replaced with.
The only thing to consider here is that you cannot switch mismatched level spells. For instance, you can only replace a level 1 spell with another level 1 spell. Similarly, you can only change a level 2 spell with another level 2 spell, and so on.
Once you have changed the spells, they will be auto-prepared in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can check their availability for battle by viewing your Hotbar at the bottom of the screen.
