Choosing a Starter Deck – How to Play Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel Guide

Like most games, Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel offers you the option to pick from three Starter Decks. You can choose which of these 3 decks you wish to use as a Base Deck. It is important to make sure you pick a good base deck when you get this opportunity.

If you feel confused about picking the right starter deck, we’ve got just the guide for you. Check out our guide on The Best Starter Pack in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel.

Beginning a Deck in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel – Play Guide

In order to begin playing Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel, you first need to build a deck of cards. Doing so will enable you to play a match. You will use these cards in duels in the game. While this might sound like an obvious tip, we recommend that you pick the best cards for a better shot at victory.

The main objective of using these deck cards is to lower the Life Points or LP of the opponent to zero. This is why cards are so important in the game. You should take your time to understand which cards are the best before you dive head-on into Duels.

Attacking an Enemy in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel

When you take part in a Duel match in YuGiOh, you will have very few opportunities to directly attack your enemy. You can do so when they do not have a card on the field that can counter your attacks. Additionally, you can launch an attack by having a card with a higher ATK than your enemy’s DEF.

Match Phases

Let us take a look at the 5 official phases of a match inside YuGiOh! Master Duel.

  • Draw Phase – This is the first phase of the match. Here, each player will get one turn. During this turn, they will need to draw 1 card from their deck.
  • Standby – During this phase, you will need to wait until the opponent player finishes their card turn.
  • Main Phase One – The Main Phase One is the first active phase during the match. Here, you will need to set or activate the effects of your cards on the match field.
  • Battle Phase – In this phase, you will have to actively attack the Life Points (LP) of your enemy’s cards.
  • Main Phase Two – This is the exact same as Main Phase One.

Gathering/Summoning Monsters

During one of the many Main Phases in a duel, you will have the opportunity to summon a Monster Card onto the field. You can choose if you want to either Summon a card or Set it in a facedown position. Before going ahead, you need to remember that you can only summon or set a Monster Card one time per turn.

Spell/Trap Cards

These cards are similar to Monster Cards. Just like the Monster Cards, you can use these cards during each of the phases in a match. These cards have specific effects and purposes, and you can also activate them during the Main Phases.

Graveyard (GY)

The Graveyard, also known as GY, is the area where all of your discarded cards go. These are cards that you have already used.

And that’s just about it. This was our guide of all the things you need to know when you first play Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. While the game may initially appear intimidating or tricky, things actually look fun once you understand the different elements in it. We recommend you read this guide completely before you play Master Duel, so that you get off to a good start right away.

Titus D'souza

Nope, Titus isn't as serious as this picture implies. Began calling himself a gamer after burning his eyes out playing Road Rash as a kid. Somehow manages to get headshot in a game of Counter Strike even before a round begins. Oh, and he's also a photographer.
