Fishing is an important activity in the game which provides meat for food, essential for your survival. It can give by-products that are crafting materials, and some quests may require you to capture specific fish as well. So, here’s how to fish in Once Human if this mini-game is feeling a little complicated at first.
How to Fish in Once Human
Here’s a breakdown on how to fish in Once Human.
Before you go fishing:
- Craft a Fishing Rod: You’ll need 20 Logs and 10 Copper Ingots. Head over to a Supplies Workbench at your base and craft a Fishing Rod.
- Craft Bait: Bait is also crafted at the Supplies Workbench. You can go for a Dough Fish bait which needs x1 Corn to craft. You can also buy bait from a fish vendor, Margerie in Meyer’s Market. There’s also Lure that you can throw into the water body to lure in fish towards you.
- Note that different bait may attract different types of fish. So, keep experimenting and understand what works best in your location.
Finding a Fishing Spot:
Look for bodies of water like rivers or lakes all over the map. If you check out the pegboards on docks, you will see the type of fishes available in that area.
Docking areas sometimes have fishing events with a higher chance of catching rare fish like Electric Eel—you can look for them on the map periodically. When you’ve found the right spot for fishing, it’s time to cast a line.
- Equip the Fishing Rod in your hotbar.
- Right-click to aim and then left click to cast the line. Ideally, cast close to you to minimize reeling distance.
- Wait for a fish to approach your bait. You’ll see a bobber icon in the middle of the screen.
- Once the bobber starts to glow, indicating a bite, hold down the left mouse button to start reeling.
You’ll see two bars on the bottom right of your screen:
- Escaped-Hooked: This bar fills up as you successfully reel the fish in.
- Break-Slack: This bar depletes if you fight the fish too much.
The key is to maintain tension on the line. Focus on filling the top bar all the way up, while also ensuring that the bottom bar does not deplete.
Here’s how you can do this:
- Keep an eye on the fish’s movement. When the fish pulls in one direction, move your camera slightly in the opposite direction. Adjust your camera position as needed.
- If you manage to keep the Escaped-Hooked bar filled before the Break-Slack bar depletes, you’ll successfully reel in the fish!
If you’re struggling to catch fish in Once Human, don’t worry. Keep trying and repeating the process— and eventually, you will get the hang of it. Make sure to avoid pulling the line too hard as it can scare the fish away.
