The Horse Cart is a useful item in Dead Rails that comes in handy for storage and transport while you’re away from the train. Whether you’re tackling challenges like the Pony Express or exploring solo, here’s how to find, equip, and use a Horse Cart during your run.
What is the Horse Cart?
As the name suggests, the Horse Cart is an attachable storage cart that can be pulled by a tamed horse. While it doesn’t offer as much capacity or protection as the Train, it’s a portable option that players can use to carry loot, weapons, or even teammates. It’s especially useful when the Train is not accessible.
Where to Find the Horse Cart in Dead Rails and How to Equip it

Horse Carts are usually found inside a barn, which has a noticeable red color, however, it’s located away from the main railway track. You will come across normal as well as fast zombies here, and you can obtain other items such as a Saddle, Horses (for taming), and other Junk.
To use one, you’ll first need to tame a horse by finding and equipping a Saddle. Saddles can be looted or bought from the General Store in a Town. Once you’ve got a horse saddled, simply attach the cart and it’s ready to go. The Cowboy class player spawns with a tamed horse, making this process slightly faster.
You can weld various items to the Horse Cart. You can attach Sheet Metal or Barbed Wire to increase its defense and guard against attacks, especially if you’re away from your train and fellow teammates. You can also weld multiple horse carts together and have a horse or unicorn pull them. Players using the Horse class can also pull the Horse Cart themselves.
For offensive powers, add a Maxim Gun with ammo to turn your cart into a mobile battle station. In case you’re not carrying too much loot, you can weld chairs which lets teammates ride on the horse cart.
If you want to detach it, you can place it in your sack, have another player grab it, or try jumping twice.
While the Horse Cart isn’t as useful as a Train, if you were looking for a way to move with items and other players while away from the train, it’s a great tool. The fact that you can weld weapons to it to protect yourself makes it even better.
