Oil is a valuable resource primarily used for fueling in Frostpunk 2. Since the life of your citizens is understandably hard in extremely cold temperatures and harsh conditions, you will need a consistent supply of this resource to run the City. You start with Coal as the fuel at the beginning but Oil is the better option further ahead in the game because 1 Oil generates 5 Heat as opposed to 1 Heat from 1 Coal. If you’re struggling with getting more oil, and how to extract, and transfer, this guide will come in handy.

How to Get More Oil
Players can get Oil from the Frostlands’ Old Dreadnought colony in the first chapter of story mode. Look for wells and extract Oil from there – you can do so by setting up Extraction Districts in this location’s 3 deposits. Make sure you have already set up a Logistics District on an Old Waystation (with the Frostbreaker) because that is how you can survey the frozen lands around New London and find a source of fuel to ensure its future.
Now that you have Oil from here, you have to send it over to New London and for this, you must use the Resource Transfer option. Click on the Colony icon at the top right corner of the screen and then click on the Barrel symbol to transfer resources.
In a new window, you can select the capacity to transfer and hit the button at the bottom to initiate the process.
Aside from this, research Ideas to get more Oil in Frostpunk 2. Look for Hydraulic Pumpjack or Fracturing Pumpjack – both need 100 Heatstamps but the former slightly increases Disease, and the latter slightly increases Squalor. There’s also the Carrion Coal Liquefactor and Pressurised Coal Liquefactor that can help you get more Oil. Once you’ve made your decision, you’re ready to set up these structures in your Expanded Extraction District. For an upgraded version, you get the Advanced Fractured Pumpjack which gives 220 Oil Output.
You will face a choice as a Steward at the start of Chapter 2 – Defeat the Frost or Embrace the Frost? Since oil reached the City, people are happy about it, but there is disagreement between Factions regarding the future.
If you choose to Embrace the Frost, you will be able to unlock the Adaptive Pumps generator upgrade that uses any fuel. Plus, it will also grant unlimited output Frostland settlements.
If you choose to Defeat the Frost, it means that the City’s Generator will be upgraded to exclusively use Oil as the fuel. This will affect flexibility and put all focus on Oil, which can have a negative impact if the production comes to a halt. Embracing will keep things versatile because the Generator can use Coal, Oil, or Steam.
