Overwatch 2 had rolled out the latest season 8 update which introduced players to new sets of skins, an additional hero, and interestingly large framerate drops on their PS5 consoles. Ever since its release, many players have reported massive fps drops on their console while playing online making the game almost unplayable. The choppy and laggy framerates have made even navigating through the main menu incredibly stuttering for players.
Updated: According to the official forum, the PS5 performance issue has been fixed and the update is now available for players. The Executive Producer of Overwatch 2, Jared Neuss, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to inform players that the fix for the framerate drops issue is now live. Players will be able to enjoy the game without any stuttering or lag.
Overwatch 2 PS5 Framerate Drops Troubleshooting Tips
Fortunately, Blizzard has addressed the performance issue on the PlayStation 5 console on their official forum. They are aware of the bugs and issues that are affecting the game. And they are working to resolve the framerate drops as quickly as possible. Players can keep track of all the updates regarding the issue on the official forum.
Before you try out the workarounds, check if any server outage or maintenance is going on for the time being. Players can check if the servers are running by heading toward the official Overwatch 2 X page (formerly known as Twitter) or the dedicated Downdetector page available.
Switch to PS4
If you are someone who still has their old PS4 console, this might be the chance to switch it to play Overwatch 2 without any performance issues. Many players have reported that framerate drops are specific to PS5 and players switching to PS4 haven’t come across the issue as of now.
Check PS5 Service Status
In addition to Overwatch 2, players can also check if all the PlayStation services are up and running on the official service status page. Sometimes service issues can cause even more framerate drops while playing online multiplayer.
Check for OW2 Updates
We recommend that you go through and check if there are any updates or patches available for Overwatch 2. Since the issue is under investigation by the developers, they will likely release an update mitigating the issue for the time being.
Restart the PS5
While it sounds like the most obvious choice, restarting PS5 might help you resolve any temporary fps drops, lag, or stuttering issues. While you are at it, you can also power cycle your console for better results. Here are the steps you can follow:
- Shut down the console by pressing the button until the light blinks.
- Once done, remove the power cable and let the PS5 rest for another 20 minutes or so.
- After that, you can reconnect the cables and restart the console.
Contact Support
If there are no updates available, players can simply contact the official support and report the problem accordingly. Since the devs are investigating the issue, they will likely address the report and work around to fix it for you.
Players can reinstall Overwatch 2 on their PS5 consoles to fix the framerate drop issue. However, we would suggest that you keep track of all the updates by Blizzard. We will actively keep track of the issue and provide you with a definite fix once there is a working solution available while updating this guide.
