Shotguns are best for close combat only. Using them in a fight where enemies are far away would be risky. You can add a long-range assault rifle, in incase a shotgun is good enough in some situations. So switching the weapon at the right time will help you to stay longer in the match.
Shotguns in nature are slow weapons, they have low fire rates. And it also carries a slow reload animation. This can a little risky, but when it comes to damage, it is hard for anyone to get away if falls in the range of shotgun fire. In simple words, there is less scope for mistakes when you are running around using a shotgun.
