The genre of First Person Shooters (FPS) would not exist without the first Doom. Since its release in 1993, Doom set the template for all run and gun shooters that came after it. Now after 30 years and 7 mainline entries, the franchise is at its all-time peak in terms of popularity. So we decided to catch up on the games (new and old) and rank all the Doom games from worst to best.
All Doom Games Ranked
7. Final Doom(1996)
Released in 1996 the game was an addition to the mainline Doom series. But fans realized it was just a glorified mixtape of previous hit levels and the same gameplay formula of the previous two entries. With nothing new to offer fans, Final Doom is considered one of the worst Doom games you can play.
6. Doom 3 (2004)
Doom 3 was the franchisees’ entry into a new console generation in 2004. Unlike previous games, Doom 3 focused more on the story and horror elements present in the world of Doom. This leads to a slow-paced game with jumpscares and more reliance on atmosphere and set pieces. The major success of the game led to the expansion pack Doom 3:Resurrection of Evil in 2005. You can play the new BFG edition of the game as it comes along with improved graphics, control system, and other quality-of-life improvements.
5. Doom 64 (1997)
Originally released as a Nintendo 64 port, Doom 64 lets you play as the now iconic Doomguy making his way through level after level crushing all that comes his way. The best-looking game from that era, Doom 64 has some of the best levels in the series.
4. Doom(1993)
The game that started it all, Doom (1993) is simple at its core – shoot guns, and kill demons. But this simple idea is polished to almost perfection as Doom lets you run around massive maze-like maps filled with demons and health picks. The influence that this game has had on FPS games alone makes it one of the greatest games ever made.
3. Doom II (1994)
How do you improve on perfection? Just add The Super Shotgun. Doom II makes small but impactful changes to its already solid foundation by adding the now iconic Super Shotgun and new enemy types for you to try out.
2. Doom Eternal (2020)
If you could use one word to describe Doom Eternal, it would be…more. The game adds to the already stellar reboot of Doom (2016) with faster-paced combat, massive levels, weapon upgrades, and more lore (not everyone is a fan). The only thing holding the game back is its steep difficulty which might intimidate newer players of the series, but once you get used to it there is nothing quite like Eternal’s gameplay loop.
1. Doom (2016)
How do you take a beloved but now stale series and reinvent it for a new generation of gamers? Doom(2016) is the answer to that question. With a relentless pace that powers through the entire game from start to finish coupled with just the right amount of nostalgia for the old fans and you have a certified modern classic on your hands. Also, did I mention the addition of Glory Kills? Doom Eternal might be faster and more relentless but Doom(2016) fires on all cylinders making it the best Doom game there ever was.
