What Is The Curse Mark On Sasuke In Naruto? Explained

Before we go ahead with events of the Chunin Exams & the Curse Mark, there are spoilers below and you have been warned. The second phase of the Chunin Exams will introduce Naruto and his co. to the despicable villain, Orochimaru.

After numerous events in the Chunin Exams, Orochimaru places a Curse Mark on Sasuke before disappearing. However, most viewers don’t get what it does and how it affects Sasuke and the storyline. So, everything you need on the Cursed Seal of Heaven is explained below.

Sasuke is on the hunt for his big brother and that is his goal while getting stronger with Team 7. After his one-tomoe Sharingan in the Land of Waves arc, it was the Forest of Death arc where he got the second tomoe along with the Cursed Seal of Heaven. The Curse Mark on Sasuke in short is a power boost that he can choose to use. However, there is a lot more to it.

What is the Curse Mark on Sasuke in Naruto?

The Curse Mark on Sasuke aka the Cursed Seal of Heaven is one of the strongest of Orochimaru’s cursed seals. The seal consists of three tomoe pattern, similar to the Sharingan, and once activated, it turns orange-red and spreads flame-like markings across Sasuke. Once the seal activates, Sasuke receives increased chakra levels and physical capabilities and at the second level, Sasuke was on par with Naruto in his one tail form.

Orochimaru’s intention with the cursed seal is to take over Sasuke’s body to have the power of the Sharingan. Since the Third Hokage ultimately seals his arms with the Reaper Death Seal, Orochimaru can no longer conjure any jutsu. Along with the Sharingan, Orochimaru ultimately wants to return to his former glory with even more power. However, in Naruto Shippuden, things will take an interesting turn. If you are going to watch Naruto Shippuden soon after, you can use this filler list to skip certain episodes that don’t focus much on the main arc.

At the second level of the cursed seal, his skin turned dark-grey and his hair grew and turned dark blue. His eyes also turned dark grey. Additionally, he grew claw-shaped wings from his back which he could use to fly. Also, a star-shaped mark appeared across the bridge of his nose. The Curse Mark on Sasuke is finally removed by Itachi Uchiha during the inevitable battle of the brothers. However, that part is in the Naruto Shippuden series so you have something to look forward to.

One thing that most viewers forget is that the seal itself contains Orochimaru’s chakra. So basically, his consciousness remained split amongst the cursed seals and even after defeat, Orochimaru could be brought back with this.
