Starfield: Character Creation & How It Works

Wondering about how the options affect your character creation in Starfield? This guide will help clear things for you.

Starfield gives the players new ways for Character Creation with quite a lot of options. What makes this system interesting is, are the Background and Traits mechanics. Through them, you can make your character more fine-tuned. But these are a lot of options to choose from, and thus it is understandable that many players find them daunting. So without further ado let us quickly check how character customization works in Starfield.

How Character Creation Works in Starfield

starfield character customization explained

While creating your character in Starfield you get to change the following aspects of it:

  • Biometric ID
  • Body
  • Face
  • Background
  • Traits

Here is everything you should know about these options.

Biometric ID

This is what your character will look like in the game. You can change your character later on by visiting the genetics facility.

Body

This section allows you to change the body of your character.

  • The first circular wheel allows you to change your character’s body between muscular, thin, and heavy. As you move around the slider you can see your character’s body structure change.
  • You also get to change:
    • Body Type
    • Walk Style
    • Skin Tone

Face

The face section allows you to change the facial features of your character. These changes include:

  • Skin Tone
  • Head Shapes
  • Hair
  • Hair Color
  • Eyes

Background – How Character Creation Works in Starfield

As the name suggests it decides the background of your character, which determines the starting skills you get. Each background grants players three starting skills.

Let us take the example of Combat Medic, if you choose this to be your character’s background then they get the following skills:

  • Pistol Certification: Pistols deal 10% more damage.
  • Medicine: You can heal 10% more when using Med Packs.
  • Weight Lifting: You can carry 10 Kilograms more than your original capacity.

Here are some of the backgrounds that you can choose from:

  • Beast Hunter
  • Bouncer
  • Bounty Hunter
  • Chef
  • Combat Medic
  • Cyber Runner
  • Cyberneticist
  • Diplomat
  • Explorer
  • Gangster
  • Homesteader
  • Industrialist
  • Long Hauler
  • Pilgrim
  • Professor
  • Ronin

Traits

This is a unique mechanism that is going to affect your character in different ways. These different ways are nothing but situational advantages and disadvantages.

So for example, if you pick up one of your Traits to be Introvert you will have more endurance while adventuring alone. While this sounds nice, you also have less endurance when adventuring with other human companions. Tired of being anxious around people in real life? Thanks to Bethesda you can now get that feeling in this game too!

A thing to note about Traits is you cannot pick two opposite traits for example Introvert and Extrovert. You cannot have both of these traits at the same time. Also, you can only pick 3 traits for your character and that too is optional.

Here are some of the traits that you get in this game:

  • Alien DNA
  • Empath
  • Extrovert
  • Freestar Collective Settler
  • Introvert
  • Kid Stuff
  • Neon Street Rat
  • Raised Enlightened
  • Raised Universal
  • Serpent’s Embrace
  • Spaced
  • Starter Home
  • Taskmaster
  • Terra Firma
  • United Colonies Native
  • Unwanted Hero
