For those who don’t know, Affinities are the special elemental power your weapon possesses. Affinity determines several factors of armament like Attribute Scaling, Attack Power, guard boost, guarded damage negation, and passives. How to Change the Affinity of a Weapon in Elden Ring

In Elden Ring, you unlock the ability to change Affinity after obtaining a Whetstone Knife. This knife allows the player to upgrade Affinity by applying Ashes of War on them. Different Ashes of War imbue different Affinity to the armament. Further, there are 5 different types of Whetstone Knives with a corresponding set of Affinity. Here’s everything you should know about them:

  • Whetblade Knife
    • Unlocks – Ability to upgrade Affinity
    • Location – Inside a chest found underground in the southeastern area of Gatefront Ruins.
  • Iron Whetblade
    • Unlocks – Ability to upgrade to Heavy, Keen, and Quality Affinities in Elden Ring.
    • Location – Loot off a corpse in the huge armory room located in Stormveil Castle.
  • Glintstone Whetblade
    • Unlocks – Ability to change the Affinity to Magic and Cold.
    • Location – Loot off a corpse hanging on the fence of an office balcony in Raya Lucaria Academy.
  • Red-Hot Whetblade
    • Unlocks – Ability to change the Affinity to Fire and Flame Art.
    • Location – Head to the Chamber Outside the Plaza Site of Grace while Radahn Festival is not active. From there, take a right turn from 3 flamethrowers and enter the tower behind them. Avoid the attacking Iron Maiden boss and enter the tower to obtain Red-Hot Whetblade.
  • Sanctified Whetblade
    • Unlocks – Ability to change the Affinity to Lightning and Sacred in Elden Ring.
    • Location – Teleport to the West Capital Rampart in Leyndell. Now, exit the chamber and take the stairs leading downwards. Exit by taking a left turn followed by which, you have to jump down. Further, take a left turn and climb the wooden structure on your right. Enter the door past the broken wall and take a left turn after that. Walk a bit until you locate the Sanctified Whetblade on that way.
  • Black Whetblade
    • Unlocks – Ability to change Affinity to Poison, Blood, and Occult.
    • Location – Head to the Night’s Sacred Ground and acquire it next to a corpse in front of an altar.
