Should You Play Canon Mode in Assassin’s Creed Shadows?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows has brought an interesting new feature to the franchise: Canon Mode. This option lets players experience the game’s story in the way Ubisoft intends it to be as the official narrative. But should you play in Canon Mode, or is it better to go your own way? Here’s everything you need to consider before making your choice.

What is Canon Mode in AC Shadows?

Canon mode removes all dialogue options that slightly impact the story. This means you can play the game as envisioned by Ubisoft without tweaking it with your decisions and their consequences. This is a choice you make at the beginning of the game and you cannot change it later, so it’s best to make a decision when you start.

If you choose Canon mode, the cutscenes will play normally, but if you don’t, you will have dialogue options that can change the way the other characters react to your response. This includes the option to spare, kill, or lie to characters.

Should you play in Canon Mode?

When you choose Canon Mode in AC Shadows, you get an authentic storytelling experience. If you want to play the story exactly as Ubisoft designed it, Canon Mode is the way to go. It ensures character arcs, dialogues, and cutscenes flow naturally without any changes.

You can skip Canon Mode if you want more freedom, giving you control over how you tackle objectives. Sometimes, both options may lead to the same outcome.

If you prefer to immerse yourself as the characters rather than follow Ubisoft’s vision, skipping this mode allows you to shape the story your way.

So, whether you should play in Canon Mode depends on your preference. If you enjoy a structured experience that stays true to Ubisoft’s story, Canon Mode is a solid choice. But if you prefer more flexibility and replayability, turning it off might be the better option.
