Cancel Attack in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 refers to the cancellation of the remaining frames of the last attack. Thus Cancel Attack continues with the new attack immediately after the last.
To cancel an attack, you need to hit another attack as soon as the first one hits the enemy. While this does require a lot of timing, you can easily master Cancel Attacks once you practice it.
