In this guide, I will show you how to Complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV.

How to Complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV

Before we can begin the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV, there are certain things to keep in mind.

  • The Quest is a giant Scavenger Hunt.
  • There are no Quest Markers so it will be hard to navigate.
  • Each playthrough of the Quest is different. So everyone will have a different experience.

The Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV can be initiated between Vesper & Horizon. The Quest is available after completing the Main Scenario Quest, The Ultimat Weapon. Just South of The Silent King, you will find a statue of Lady on the floor & Valiant Hart right next to it. Upon interacting with him, he will tell you about a Hidden Treasure locked away by Winebaud, an Explorer. Agree to help him out & he will give you a Cryptic Code to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV.

Cryptic Code 1

The first Cryptic Code you will get will contain a row of letters separated by /. Under those letters will be a line of Elements again separated by /. Keep a note of this as it will come in handy. Now you will have to find Yayaroku, he is located in Thaumaturges Guild in Ul’dah. After talking to Yayaroku, he will arrange the list of Elements in the correct order. This is done by looking at the Passage of a Poem he will recite. In the Poem, the Elements are arranged in a specific order.

Now with the corrected order, arrange the string of letters from the Cryptic Code. After arranging the string of letters, join them together to form the name of your next location. The location can be from any of the three locations mentioned below.

  • Oschon’s Embrace – is located in Lower La Noscea.
  • Florentel’s Spire – is located in North Shroud.
  • Thal’s Respite – is located in Eastern Thanalan.

Go to the location that you got and find the Novice Explorer. After interacting with him, he will give you Winebaud’s travel log. Now go back to Valiant Hart to get the next Cryptic Code.

Cryptic Code 2 – The Greatest Story Never Told Quest Complete Guide in FFXIV

The next Cryptic Code to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV, Valiant Hart will give you a string of jumbled words & the name of a person you will have to go & meet. The person you will be meeting is either:

  • Isouda – is located in Candlekeep Quay in Lower La Noscea.
  • Jahelle – located in Fallgourd Float in North Shroud.
  • Memenugu – located in Fesca’s Wash in Central Thanalan.

If you got Isouda, then solve the Cryptic Code with what she will say. Upon interacting with her, she will say the statement, “The Opposite of Nonsense is Sense”. This means that you will have to reverse the order of the Characters in your code. You will get one of the following locations:

  • White Wolf Gate
  • The Hall of Flames
  • Eshtaime’s Aesthetics

If you got Jahelle, then solve the Cryptic Code with what she will say. Upon interacting with her, she will say the statement, “I’ve Learned the Letters of Mathematics, but Alas, not the Grammar”. This means that you will have to replace the numbers in your code with their corresponding Characters like A = 01, B = 02, C = 03, & so on. You will get one of the following locations:

  • Zephyr Drift
  • Hellsbrood Holes
  • Red Mantis Falls

If you got Memenugu, then solve the Cryptic Code with what he will say. Upon interacting with him, he will say the statement, “Two steps forward, One step Back. Over & Over again, until the End”. This means that you will have to replace the first 2 letters with the letters that come after them and the third letter with the letter that comes before it in your code. Eg: ZAD will become ABC as A comes after Z, B comes after A, & C comes before D. Repeat this process till you have solved the code. You will get one of the following locations:

  • Hollowed Heavenspillar Bridge
  • Home of the Coeurlclaw
  • Bronze Lake Hot Springs

Go to the location that you got & search for a ??? Marker in the area. You will get a hint and you should return to Valiant Hart after getting the Hint. Now you will be able to do the Third Cryptic Code.

Cryptic Code 3

The next Cryptic Code to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV, Valiant Hart will give you is another code & a tip that you find help in the Marauder’s Guild. This code will be different for each player. Head towards the Marauder’s Guild in Limsa Lominsa. Once you have reached the guild, look for a Bookshelf. There will be a ??? Marker with glowing rainbow effects. It will give you tips around emotions or Emotes to be exact.

Your code will look something like All foR fen-YLL. If you take the Capitalized letters and arrange them, you will get the name of an Emote. For the Code above the letters are ARYLL and if arranged correctly will become RALLY. This means that you will have to use the RALLY Emote somewhere but Where? If you see the last word of the code, fen-YLL, you will notice that Fen-YLL is the name of the Leatherworkers guild in Gridania. Likewise, your code will contain the name of the location where you will have to use the Emote. Here is the list of Codes with their Emotes & Locations:

  • Code 1:
    • HylLfyr’s cUtthroAts and briGands
    • Emote: LAUGH
    • Location: Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks, The Astalicia.
  • Code 2:
    • All foR fen-YLL
    • Emote: RALLY
    • Location: Old Gridania, beneath the Leatherworker’s Guild.

    • Location: South Shroud, beneath the bridge leading South from Camp Tranquil.
  • Code 5:
    • cOncealed belah’dian maJestY
    • Emote: JOY
    • Location: Eastern Thanalan, The Invisible City: X = 15, Y = 17.
  • Code 6:
    • PulPy, NuTritiOus, And decIDedly DElicious cItruS
    • Emote: DISAPPOINTED
    • Location: Middle La Noscea, near Summerford Farms: X = 21.9, Y = 15.8.
  • Code 7:

    • Location: North Shroud, Watermill in Hyrstmill.
  • Code 9:
    • red ligHt amidst the blUe Haze
    • Emote: HUH
    • Location: Northern Thanalan, by a torch near the top of the castle wall. Coordinates are X = 21.1, Y = 29.4.

Now go to the location from your Code and perform the Emote over there. You will find a ??? Marker and that’s where you will be performing the Emote. If done correctly, you will get Winebaud’s next Message. Now return to Valiant Hart for your Next Cryptic Code.

Cryptic Code 4

The next Cryptic Code to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV, Valiant Hart will give you will the SWORD + SWORD = DAGGER equation and will have the statement, “then return to me with a _ of _. The master of the markets has my list”. The Blank Spaces will contain letters that will be different for each player. The master of the markets in the message is the Master of the Markets of your Home City. The Master of the Markets can be Seseroga in Ul’Dah, Parsemontret in Old Gridania, & Swozblaet in Limsa Lominsa. Go to your Master of the Markets and collect a list. The list will contain items that are equated with Numbers.

Now we will have to solve the SWORD + SWORD = DAGGER equation. The equation seems like two 5-digit Numbers are adding up to a 6-digit number. that means, we have to find out the values of SWORD & DAGGER in numbers. This is the toughest part of the Quest so I will give you the answer. You can try out the puzzle and verify if your answer is correct or not. SWORD is 78321 & DAGGER is 156642. Now from the Cryptic Code, correlate the Letters & the Numbers with the list you got from the Master of the Markets and see what it says.

For eg, if you got S of A then the numbers would be 7 of 5 which for the list I have is Ring of Sunstone. This is the Sunstone Ring. You can get the Item in the Jewelry shop in Ul’Dah. Find what item you got and get it from the Jewelry store. There are 16 possible items of which only 9 are valid. Get & equip the Item, head back to Valiant Hart, & examine the Statue.

Cryptic Code 5

This is the last Code you will have to Solve to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV. Here you will have to decypher encrypted messages from Winebaud. Valiant won’t be able to solve it but can arrange it in order. If you read the messages from Winebaud, it states that the answer is at the beginning & at the ending of the Poem lines. That means we will have to take the Starting letters & Ending letters of the Poems of Valiant Hart. It should spell out Copper Gorget.

The second message from Winebaud states that he has given the Key to the Treasure Seeker. This means that the Copper Gorget is the Key to the puzzle. You can get a Copper Gorget by purchasing it from any of the Battlecraft Stores in the 3 main Towns. The third message states that the lock is in front of you but behind my obfuscations. This means that the lock is at the back of the Statue.

Take the Copper Gorget & go behind the Statue. You will find a ??? Marker with rainbow glowing particles. Interact with it and you will get Winebaud’s Treasure. The Treasure is 10 Gil, an Achievement & more Winebaud’s Poetry.

This was all about how to complete the Greatest Story Never Told Quest in FFXIV. Hopefully, this guide has helped you. You can also check out our other guides like How To Travel Between Data Centers in FFXIV.
